Help! My 2.9 yo refuses to play by himself. He follows me around the house saying "I wanna play w mommy," doesn't let me do anything. If I give in, I feel like he will never learn to play on his own. If I don't give in, he clings more. Starts preschool in Sept. and I have a feeling he will have a rough time adjusting to it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

What happens if you start playing with him and then have to go to do something else? Will he continue playing on his own for a while? [ Reply | More ]

He says "I will wait" But he doesn't really wait, he follows me around and pesters me and/or talks to me all the time. [ Reply | More ]

I'm just throwing out ideas here but what if you were to do something alongside him ie both sit on the floor him doing a puzzle and you being next to him but doing something else. Do you think he would start to play alone that way? [ Reply | More ]

He sometimes comes up to me when I try to do things like that and closes the book I am reading or if I am on my laptop he will start nagging and try to press all the buttons. He just needs attention all the time. Don't most 2.9 yos play by themselves? [ Reply | More ]

My 2.7yo does but he has friends that don't. When I started my son in full separation classes in prep for preschool the teachers got me to sit in the classroom but not interact with ds. If he came over to me I just had to say I'm not playing. It took about 4 sessions before I could leave him. I have seen kids who are hysterical on separation but eventually they all get used to it and enjoy it. Your dc will be fine in preschool and may learn there to be more indep. GL [ Reply | More ]

NP: That was my DS. He has always wanted an adult to play with him. Or at the very least, sit and watch him play. He was hysterical when he started preschool but eventually got better. And learned to play with the other kids and by himself. It gets better as they mature. Hang in there. [ Reply | More ]
