I am so sad and freaked out. My dd will be 4 in Aug. She is 3 feet 3 inches and weighs 38.5 lbs. When entering those figures on the CDC site, she is in danger of obesity. I don't even know what to think. My dh and I are thin and obesity doesn't run in our families. She doesn't eat junk all day but it picky and prefers carbs. However, since when did a child have to watch their carbs?! Please tell me something to calm me down. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

39 inches and 38.5 lbs is not fat by any stretch of the imagination, no clue where you got the obesity claim. [ Reply | More ]

don't panic. is she consistantly following a curve? is she getting enough exercise. don't withhold food. just try to offer fruits and veggies with the carbs and don't worry. [ Reply | More ]

That's absurd. I have ds of the same age and he is about 40 inches and 40 lbs, and no way he is fat. I think you may be channeling your own issues into DD. She is very tall so quite proportionate, just based on the numbers she does not sound fat at all. [ Reply | More ]

did you compare the height and weight? Your dd is up there in both. [ Reply | More ]

A 4 year old (female) child who is 38.5 pounds and is 3 feet and 4 inches tall has a body mass index of 17.0, which is at the 86th percentile, and would indicate that your child is at risk of becoming overweight. [ Reply | More ]

most children prefer carbs, they need more than we do. You just need to make sure that she eats mostly complex carbs, not refined ones. [ Reply | More ]

My 2.5yo is 37lbs and the ped is not concerned that he is overweight. Why are you even checking this? Does she look overweight? [ Reply | More ]

My 5 y.o. has always been big. He's grown taller without gaining weight in the last year, which helps. I try get him to play and exercise a lot and limit the snacking and encourage healthy choices. I don't want to get crazy about his weight though it', I try to teach him to make good choices. [ Reply | More ]
