I finally have crossed paths with a parent who truly believes their dc is a little genius, and although it's been about 5-6 wks since G&T placements came out, still wanted to talk at length about the relative pros and cons of the citywide schools. I couldn't extricate myself fast enough from that conversation! So, these people really do exist. Probably not many of them, but they're out there... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

some kids really are geniuses. i know its not common, but when you have one it is very absorbing. I know its hard to imagine if you don't have that kind of dc, but when you do, its really hard not to be in awe of it...and exasperated much of the time. People who have a kid like this are just hoping someone out there will understand their kid, and help them be the best they can be given how they are. I have one like that (not my only dc), and I am hoping that the school we have chosen, which feels like a real fit will help. [ Reply | More ]

or: ITA. I think the OP was out of line. My dc is very bright too. I think she is far advanced than most of her peers. it is hard to deal with at times. I too am hoping her school will be the best place for her. [ Reply | More ]

My dd won't be going to citywide, but so what if another parent of a dc thinks her/his dc is a genius/HG or PG or whatever? It just might be that the parent does have a dc with unusual educational needs. What is that to you? [ Reply | More ]

OP: I thought that kind of intensity only existed on UB. I have never come across it IRL. This was a first to me. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it's so bad if he/she talked about the schools, and not how great his/her dc is. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. I have heard quite a bit of playground chatter on schools this summer already, mostly prompted by questions from moms applying this fall. Some moms are quite good at sharing the info, and I happen to think it's great. [ Reply | More ]

np: I posted above, lots of moms are inquiring these days as they are getting ready to apply in the fall. One mom was just quizzing on the Hunter process at our playground yesterday. [ Reply | More ]

Where do you think these women from UB come from? They aren't hired by the site administrator! [ Reply | More ]

OP: I think it's easier to post something here anonymously that might be a little provocative, bragging, or snobbish, but IRL people are usually more courteous, at least in my experience. [ Reply | More ]

maybe you can describe the conversation more. Many of us talk about schools and process in order to be helpful. [ Reply | More ]

One of my neighbors is like that. It is amazing how much time those people invest in their children's ELEMENTARY school education. Oh, and her kid is going to Anderson this fall. [ Reply | More ]

Here we go, another jealous of Anderson mom, mom. No matter where the kid is going to school, why WOULDN:T people get invested in elementary school education? [ Reply | More ]

Excuse me? Jealous? I ranked Anderson as #4. Either you are just like my neighbor and I would be bothered by your attitude as well or you have no clue what I meant and have never met obnoxious moms like my neighbor. Anyway. Carry on. [ Reply | More ]

not everyone who recognizes that their gifted dc might benefit from the type of approach anderson offers is obnoxious. we are hoping this school does well with our dc. we are excited, and feel the fit is right. we are lucky this is a possibility, and do not feel anything but hopeful. not everyone is obnoxious. yes, of course. We are talking about the obnoxious people. You are not one so congratulations. Why did feel like chipping in? [ Reply | More ]

because I have heard people talk about others i know, referring to them as obnoxious, or whatever. I know them not to be that way, and just shrug it off as envy/competition. sometimes people don't want others to be happy. when someone brags or talks in a way that you might find obnoxious, I just think good for them. doesn't bother me at all.
