Has anyone gone to Hair Fairies in New York? How much in total did it cost per kid (or adult!) to get the complete de-lousing? Also, they claim that it's reimbursible by health insurance, but I'm skeptical. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I went to them, my insurance did not accept claim and we paid over 1K when all was said and done. [ Reply | More ]

ARGH!!! That is what I'm fearing. DD and I have what look to be nits right now. I would do it myself but I know people who have done that and missed tons of nits, only to have the cycle repeat over and over. [ Reply | More ]

OK, this is what you do if you don't have much money. You take dd to hair fairies or licenders. You watch very, very careful at what they do. Then you go get rid (or buy their shampoo) and do yourself. You also have to comb out dd - but its free and once you've seen it done, its not as hard as you think. But, don't use rid on dd - pay up for the other stuff for her and for one expert comb out. [ Reply | More ]

Great advice! Thanks for that. I'll prob. buy their shampoo and have dh do the comb-out on me with a good lice comb. Can't do the rid as I am nursing my infant, who I hope to high heaven does not also have lice. [ Reply | More ]

doubt your newborn does - BUT, BE VERY CAREFUL - someone might suggest lavendar - and on my bottles it says can cause respitory distress and/or stop breathing in children under 3 - so I would not let it get anywhere near db. [ Reply | More ]

thank you!! I know tea tree and rosemary are also recommended. I would not use essential oils on my db. I wonder if hair fairies stuff has lavender, though. [ Reply | More ]

all of the places have some type of oil so that they won't climb back in and lay eggs (its too slippery to attach) - but olive oil will do and is most likely safe for db. I would check with ped however. Just say, we are going to put olive oil on our hair for a few days (not baby) but is this ok? I'm sure it will be fine. I would stay away from the other oils with newborn [ Reply | More ]

op here: really? she's that much cheaper? My friend recommended Abigail rosenfeld but said her family paid $500 when it was all said and done. From comment above, though, it looks like it is a lot cheaper than the HF's. [ Reply | More ]

Abby Rosenfeld is amazing - we had use Licenders in the past. Abby is much cheaper - process was also much more painless. We paid $1,200 for Licenders and it was like $350 or so for Abby. [ Reply | More ]

if you go, just make the appointment for your dd. Then if you have (which you most likely do), they will do you too. [ Reply | More ]

you won't be done with it. Here goes. It will kill all the live lice in your head. It will do nothing to the nits (eggs) on your hair. They will do their best to come all of them out, but they will miss some. Those will hatch and will need to be killed before they reach sexual maturity. So you will have to shampoo again. They will tell you the schedule. You will also need to wash everything you have worn, all bedding and bag up all stuffed animmals and vacum all rugs and furniture. IT SUCKS [ Reply | More ]

First, they are awesome. Second, it depends on your insurance - some cover it up front, some reimburse & others do nothing. We spent about $400/500, but dd hat A LOT of nits. [ Reply | More ]

Hey, if you live in Westchesterand you want someone closer than HairFairies or Abigail, there is a local woman who has been nitpicking for 11 years. Her name is Anna, The Lice Lady of Westchester and she is amazing. She works out of her home and is not expensive at all. Her # is 914-497-5465. She did myself and my 2 children and she was great! If your kids have that long, long hair that seems to be de rigeur among young girls, cut it. My girls have bobs and we've NEVER had a problem (even though one of their schools has has three outbreaks so far this school year). [ Reply | More ]

lenght of hair is not a factor. sometimes loose hair vs hair in a ponytail is a factor. [ Reply | More ]

Braids tight on the head are good--pony tails that stick out are not--also proximity of hanging coats and scarves can be a way lice spread [ Reply | More ]

your not having a problem has zero to do with length of hair. at our school break-out it was mostly the boys (all of whom had short hair, much shorter than bobs) who got it. you just happen to have lucked out. we have, too. i never thought it was something i was doing "right," just dumb luck. licebusters is also supposed to be great. havent used them privately, but my kids schools contract with them for checks and anybody with lice needs to go to them privately for clearance before they can return . everybody loves them. they have a flat fee per person so you dont have to worry abt how long it will take and how much the bill will be. i think they also guarantee it so if the lice comes back they will redo for free. you can google them if you are interested. HAHAHAHAHHAH. Are you people really paying this much to get lice taken care of? Oh man. There really IS a sucker born every minute. Wash their heads in olive oil. Comb out the nits. Wash their clothes and sheets. Call it a day. Seriously. It's lice, people. Not cancer. [ Reply | More ]

there are some home treatments that really work -- one involves putting something all over the hair (i will google what it is, listerine or something), blow drying till it hardens and sleeping in shower cap. may sound crazy but i know people who swear by it when we had a school lice outbreak.
