What's your take on school uniforms? Just realized that my son's school will require them once he hits 3rd grade, and I'm not thrilled by the idea. He hates any shirts with buttons now, so hope he outgrows it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Nest+m? Not really a uniform, just a polo shirt and khakis [ Reply | More ]

OP: yes. I hate polo shirts and khakis. Also, as mentioned, ds refuses at this point to wear any shirt with buttons because he says they bother him. He'll either have to grow out of it or wear t-shirts under the polos. [ Reply | More ]

I think uniforms sound great at first (one stop shopping, no thinking/fighting in the morning, etc). But they end up being are more of a hassle then they are worth. DH forgets to take in the drycleaning, so no clean khakis, etc. And there is always at least one child too heavy for the uniform. My heart breaks for that child. [ Reply | More ]

If a kid is too fat for the uniform (and they do come in big sizes), that's a health issue that his parents need to attend to immediately. [ Reply | More ]

Oh come on, you can get khakis in any size. and you can wash them at home, btw, no need to dryclean. [ Reply | More ]

If OP is talking about NEST+m the uniform is bought through Land's End. Their sizes run pretty big. [ Reply | More ]

I wore a uniform until 8th grade--loved it. It was so easy. (We had some choice in the matter--a few different skirts and shirts to pick from.) [ Reply | More ]

yes, they are dreary for the parents but kids just don't think about it unless the mothers/fathers talk about it. they are supposed to be LEARNING, not becoming mini Paris Hiltons! [ Reply | More ]

They are, but then you focus on other things. We were insane about our bookbags instead of our outfits. [ Reply | More ]

I used to wear a skirt suit everyday for work when that was the norm. Even though I bought beautiful suits, they came to feel bland and dreary. I would just wake up and throw it on. I think you underestimate how this can make you feel about your body and yourself. It was easier, sure. But it really made things colorless. didn't really think about it or realize it until flexibility became possible in my work world. [ Reply | More ]

What you wear as an adult and what you wear as a child are 2 different things. My parents never bought my clothes for me when I had a job. They did when I went to school--uniform or no. [ Reply | More ]

you think kids don't develop an awareness for their bodies and sense of self? How they feel? taste? color? I disagree. has nothing to do with who buys the clothes, but rather, how they make you feel. its depressing and dreary [ Reply | More ]

That wasn't my experience. Perhaps not having to worry about the clothes I was wearing freed me up to focus on the more important things in life? Besides, it's not like kids are in their school clothes 24/7--they have plenty of time to dress as they like. [ Reply | More ]

Not really. Many kids go to afterschool activities, and don't get home until 6 or so. So except for weekends the uniform is it. [ Reply | More ]

Love uniforms. The kids don't get to compare labels (at least not for clothes), and it lends an air of school cohesiveness, which should not be underestimated. I agree that especially in the lower grades, kids really don't care about being bland and dreary. [ Reply | More ]

But in lower grades kids wear whatever parents buy for them so it's not an issue either way. It's the later grades when you see kids dressing inappropriately and when uniforms would be of use. [ Reply | More ]

Love uniform. My dc's preschool and ongoing both had them. Mornings are hassle free in terms of clothing choices, that's for sure. [ Reply | More ]
