DH left the container of expressed breastmilk out on the counter this afternoon for 4 hrs. It was in the fridge. What are the rules now? Can we even use it? If it goes back in fridge I have to use within 24 hrs, right? Or can I freeze it? I'm so pissed. Was trying to rebuild supply and now we have nothing. TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i think it is fine to use within next 24 hrs. if need be, have dh feed it to dc tonight and you pump for the next feeding. [ Reply | More ]

there's at least 5 feedings worth so way more then we need. i was hoping i could freeze it as it would last longer but i didn't know if milk in fridge could come to room temp and then be frozen. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with the poster below. I broke almost all the milk rules, and my dd is 16 mos, and aside from two mild colds, hasn't been sick a day in her life. [ Reply | More ]

thanks. i've only pumped and put it in the fridge because we always use within 8 days. i've never frozen any milk. i can't find any guidelines regarding milk that went from fridge to room temp to freezer so didn't know if i could do it. [ Reply | More ]

kellymom.com may have this info, but just freeze it and don't get pissed at your dh. they have no clue about this stuff. my dh once fed my dc though I didn't think dc was hungry-dc promptly spit up, and I got so mad that dh wasted the milk! now I laugh about it, but they don't understand the work that goes into getting the milk [ Reply | More ]

So true. Pumping was the most awful part of being a new mom. And DH never really understood that. [ Reply | More ]

Is your apt airconditioned? I'd give it the sniff test, and probably use it tonight. Gives you an extra pumping session. [ Reply | More ]

yes, it's ac. my concern was there was at least 5 feedings that he left out. i worked my butt off this week trying to get this milk pumped b/c i just haven't been getting that much out and now I may have to chuck it all. i tossed three of them in the freezer b/c i didn't know what to do with them. should i take them out. i really don't want to have to use them all in next 24 hrs b/c i want be able to pump this much out in that time. Freeze it. Breast milk can be left out for up to 5 hrs. It has natural anti-bacterial properties. I pumped exclusively for 5 months and frequently forgot to put it in the fridge. If you do not have AC - i'd be a little concerned in this weather though. [ Reply | More ]
