Suburban NYC moms: do most of the moms in your town WOHM or SAHM? And of the WOHMs, do they and their DH both work in Manhattan? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Honestly, no. About half don't work at all, of the rest, many sort of kind of work (they are "freelance" decorators or lawyers who do a house closing twice a year), many of the FT WOHMs work locally while PT WOHMs are split b/w local and Manhattan. But in the neighboring town, which is less affluent, there are a lot of families where both parents work full time in Manhattan and commute daily. [ Reply | More

There are a lot of SAHMs in my town (majority)...but also a good number of WOHMs (I'm never the only one in DC's classes). I work locally -- and so do a lot of other women -- but it also depends on the field (I'm in education and had plenty of local options -- someone in finance would really be better off in NYC). It's an affluent town and a lot of the commuting WOHMs work PT or have job flexibility. Most dads commute to NYC. Town is known for the easy (and quick) commute. [ Reply | More
