When should total meltdowns stop? Obviously there is a range, but at what age does having a complete meltdown over a mistake on paper or a missing necklace mean that there is something else going on? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yes-- plenty. She has a younger brother, but they both get their fair share of positive attention I think. [ Reply | More ]

Yes- totally. Like mom and dad. A little on the anxious/OCD side, but functional. Just wondering what to do going forward. [ Reply | More ]

if your gut's telling you anxiety is an issue, i would trust that. child therapist mom here who also has a bright perfectionistic dd (only 3 though). emphasizing self-soothing skills is vital (breathing, muscle relaxation, belly breaths). i alos say things like "that happens" when messes or losses or screw ups take place - just normalizing that things go wrong sometimes. make some messes together (finger painting, cooking with your hands, dumping out a huge container of legos, etc.). does this help at all? It does-- a lot. thank you for taking the time to respond. I am also new in the field of child therapy (spectrum kids though), and worry that i'm dumping all of my personal anxiety onto my own kids. [ Reply | More ]

it's always a tension to balance projection with assessment when it comes to our own kids ;-) [ Reply | More ]
