What Personalities Fit What Schools? I always see people asking, before giving advice on which school should a poster send their child to, what is their dc personality like. I would love to send dd to a montessori nursery and pre-k, mostly because i feel it will enable her to to be more free and enjoy herself more before entering a stricter classroom. However, I would love for my daughter to attend Convent of Sacred Heart. I kept wondering if that will work against my daughter. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

why do you think a strict place will be best for your dd? You just can't know how. Let her go to nursery school, see what kind of learner she is (your teacher and PSD will help with that) and then worry about schools when applying and touring. Same thing with preschools..tour them, ask questions and see where you can invision your dc. My dds went to developemental preschool and it was great. They went on to progressive ele. schools since traditional wasn't for them. GL [ Reply | More ]

Well... If you visit Trinity, it's super quiet. Not even the kids talked and all the teachers whispered. I couldn't envision my dc going there - dc is a chatter. Chapin girls seemed very polite. Spence made a big deal out of picking nose. Brearley girls seemed kinda spacey. [ Reply | More ]

np If your kid is picking her nose at 4 or 5 yo, I'd hope SOMEONE would tell her to stop! [ Reply | More ]

4yo - you seem like a scary person. [ Reply | More ]

Huh? If your kid was at playdate and picking her nose (rude AND unhygienic for others), wtf is the problem with her being asked to stop? How am I scary exactly? They use the K classrooms (and manipulatives) for those playdates--thinking they don't want boogers all over the stuff. [ Reply | More ]

Made a big deal out of who picking her nose? You mean your DD did that and they commented on it? [ Reply | More ]

You can tell from watching your child how they like to learn. With my son, I know he would thrive well in a progressive environment with limited structure as he is very self motivated to learn and is constantly question and trying to figure things out. Other kids I know thrive under a very structured environment. Every kid is different. [ Reply | More ]

Same. Dd is self motivated and if she starts asking on a topic, more questions pop up and I thought progressive education model would suit her to go in depth on a topic of interest. But I can see how some kids would not thrive and need structure/drills. [ Reply | More ]

I personally think that while the schools do have different philosophies, most people don't get to pick and choose from ongoings anyway, Also, I am touring public schools so I can't even point fingers but our generation is a little over the top. My parents just sent me to the local elementary school, didn't tour, same as their parents and we all ended up happy in HS and at good colleges. [ Reply | More ]

np Excellent point. If you're set on sending dc to a NYC private, you apply broadly and hope a school sees a fit and that you're not shut-out. You don't get to pick and choose, so why worry about this stuff before you get multiple acceptances (which likely won't happen)? [ Reply | More ]

you may be misinformed about montessori. at my daughter's montessori school, the kids work independently for some of the day (and can choose what they want to work on), but they are expected to be well behaved and respectful and take part in the routine-- not exactly a carefree time though they do have fun outdoors everyday. anyway, try to tour the schools and see what the kids are actually doing on a daily basis and decide whether it's a match for your daughter [ Reply | More ]

Yes, you might be right. Im just going from what I've read off their site. I like how they have the kids help around the classroom (my daughter loves to help and do things on her own) and how it isnt so structured and theyre able to make theyre own decision. I thought it would be great since once they enter school its going to be mostly teacher driven until she finishes. if im wrong, i apologize, however, I will be attending open houses come fall.
