SN moms ... anyone have a child in Forest Hills schools? I have a mainstream kindergartener who will receive OT and PT when he starts school. Any BTDT perspective to share? TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

The best public school in Forest Hills for kids who need these therapies is PS 144. [ Reply | More ]

Why? I keep hearing a lot about 196 and 101 .... do you know anything about those schools? [ Reply | More ]

Those two schools have the best reading scores but they have next to no special education in the schools. And their speech and OT and PTs are stretched very thin. Your child would be under intense pressure to move fast in reading and math to keep the schools' scores high and grouped for therapies and perhaps even missing therapies. At PS 144 they have an excellent administration and a record of meeting all children's IEP therapies. They have more therapists on the staff. And they won't put you under such pressure to move rapidly. (I have a child in PS 196 and a special ed child in in PS 144) [ Reply | More ]

^^ Contact the parent coordinators for 196, 101 and 144. They will give you an honest reading of how your child will do. The parent coordinators for 196 and 144 are great, very responsive. I tried several times to get a tour of 101 for my child and the parent coordinator there kept not returning my calls and emails--she knew I had a child with special needs. That tells you a lot right there. [ Reply | More ]

^^ Also PS 196 will have just one or two kindergartens this fall. A new elementary is opening nearby with different admin. and will offer 4 kindergartens, I believe. Perhaps that school will be a good fit for you. Check to see if school will have OT and PT on staff FULLTIME. That is very important. Your child can;t get IEP services if the therapists aren't in the building. [ Reply | More ]

Don't go to PS196. Please check greatschool and inside school websites for the review on this school. The principal and administrative staff are very cold. Teachers won't review the school work. There are also some negative postings on this board. You can search for them. [ Reply | More ]
