How far would you travel for preschool? Is it a waste of time for me to apply to a school that is 25 blocks away. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Preschool itself is a waste of time, unless your kid is learning disabled. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I totally disagree. DS is an only and being around other kids has been amazing for him. But don't sign him up far away...stay local. [ Reply | More ]

This is really dumb--like saying high school is a waste of time because you could just as easily get a GED. [ Reply | More ]

ITTA. Kindergarten is all that's necessary to prep for first grade. [ Reply | More ]

I don't send my ds to preschool to "prep" for kindergarden or first grade. I send him to be socialized and develop his intellectual curiousity. It's prep for life, really. And he LOVES it. I feel sorry for your dc. [ Reply | More ]

That can all be done at home, and at the park and the playground. [ Reply | More ]

good for you..but for many of our kids they get more out of preschool than running in the park all morning [ Reply | More ]

So YOU say. Or perhaps is it that YOU get more out of it? [ Reply | More ]

NP- I'm applying to get DC out of the house for a few hours. [ Reply | More ]

yes I say. It's a great 2.5 hrs for the kids. They socialize, learn and grow. Nothing wrong with it. If you don't agree good for you but your way isn't the only way [ Reply | More ]

np: I don't get anything out of pre-school. It's expensive and I have to pay the nanny for that time anyway. DS, on the other hand, loves it and has developed many new interests (normal pre-school age interests, but things he didn't enjoy doing until exploring them in a group setting). [ Reply | More ]

I agree. The only reason why our children went to preschool (full day) was because it was cheaper than hiring a nanny. It's glorified day care. [ Reply | More ]

our preschool is a mile away. Not far at all. We take a 15min bus ride across town [ Reply | More ]

We spent four years at a preschool across town and up 30 blocks. IMHO, the 25 blocks isn't that big a deal as long as you're not crossing E to W (or vice versa). [ Reply | More ]

I cross 20 blocks (1 mi) from east to west village and it's so easy [ Reply | More ]

I would do that (since easy buses and island narrower down there). Just meant that N/S AND E/W gets to be too much. Either N/S or E/W is probably fine. [ Reply | More ]

yes going from N/s then E/W would be a PITA [ Reply | More ]

If there's a good one close to you, that can be a lot less of a hassle. If you're looking for one that has some other special methodology or has "connections" or is a feeder into a K-12, then you might want to consider a longer commute. [ Reply | More ]

Depends whether you have a second child who will have to be schlepped along for pickup. If not, then 25 blocks is okay (though not ideal). If so, I would try to stay closer because it will be a huge burden for someone to take child #2 to pickup every day. [ Reply | More ]

Even worse when child #2 starts same school with different schedule [ Reply | More ]

I think it really depends on how easy it is to get there by public transportation. We commuted about 20 blocks but it was a one-block walk to and from the subway. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't, but I'm not in NY so it might be different. ITA those saying it's hard w/ a #2 tagging along, so keep that in mind. [ Reply | More ]

It's not that hard. We did that for a year. Sometimes even with three kids. [ Reply | More ]

Well, you can make anything work. We're lucky where we are now--dd's co-op is around the block. But like I said, not in NY. [ Reply | More ]

We live uptown and our son went to preschool downtown. It was a 45 minutes commute one way. The only reason we did that was the fact that the school was close to where I work. [ Reply | More ]
