I bring my kids to a home day care provider. I know they are safe here..however it is run by two young women (who don't have children) and their mom. The daughters seem to think my 19 month old has emotional problems b/c he is so grouchy all the time. I have learned (since he is #2) that this is a challenging age that they will grow out of. Anyway, since one care provider is a nurse and the other a speech therapist they always want to suggest that i ask my doc if there is a problem. i did ask my doc. and he confirmed what i thought it is a stage and he will grow out of it.... i dont appreciate the 'grumpy old man' comments but don't have the nerve to tell them to stop. ok vent over. "I did have him checked by a doctor at your suggestion. He's fine. Can we stop the grumpy old man comments. I would hate for them to interfer with an otherwise wonderful relationship." Smile. [ Reply | More ]

i appreciate that they are concerned and treat dcs like family but they seem to think they ALWAYS have the right advice. they also wanted me to send my older (not even 3) ds to a speech therapist. I'm like he is 2 1/2!! Can you let the kid develop before you go putting labels on him? [ Reply | More ]

We had a teacher like that too. Teachers suck today. They want easy well behaved children and if they don't get 15 of them, they send them all for an "evaluation". It is not going to bode well for society in the long run [ Reply | More ]

We have to start paying attention and educating oursleves on the topic. Read some books, see how many young males are medicated in the US compared to other countries. Stand up to "authority". Band together. Stop throwing around the terms, she has issues, or her ds has anger issues like its candy. MY goodness - did anyone read the ny times magazine article this week? We are now medicating our pets!!! With the same types of drugs we give our children. Someone has to stop the madness. [ Reply | More ]

Part of the madness is the "hold back summer boys" from K. Nonsense. [ Reply | More ]

poster from above and don't see how that is part of the problem. I do see that making K the new first grade is and parents respond in a coupl of ways - holding their child back because the expectations are unrealsitic or being forced to medicate a perfectly healthy dc because of unrealistic classroom expectations. But, the blame does not fall on the parents shoulders in either case [ Reply | More ]

No, my dc is in public school with a december 31 cutoff. Not a chance in hell that a summer child could or would be held back. Are you so small minded that you can't imagine someone having an opinion about a topic that does not directly affect them? [ Reply | More ]

most of the time the private schools in nyc make the decision to not accept summer boys, not the parents - because they want them old and easy to teach! [ Reply | More ]

you can start with preschoolers at risk and the hurried child and move on from there. [ Reply | More ]

op - Honestly, he isn't like that at home. I still set boundaries/rules but he is just very attached..I have gone through a seperation and lots of changes so I'm thinking that is why? I think he is VERY strong willed so that could be the problem too. [ Reply | More ]

maybe it's the way these woman approach him. my ds behaved badly at school and well at home because he didn't do welll with teacher. maybe they need to change their approach or you need to change providers. if its uncomfortable for you it may be for him as well. [ Reply | More ]

don't worry, being strong willed is not a problem, kids are supposed to have varied personalities and moods, they are individuals, and I absolutely think that the seperation probably had an effect, of course, he is allowed to be grumpy and feel however he needs to, I want to tell those providers to shut up myself, sorry you are dealing with this [ Reply | More ]
