Why is it that women (i.e. ub) seem to understand why the New Yorker cover is stupid and wrong but the men think it is harmless fun (i.e. Gawker and its commentors, John Stewart and co.). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My dh thinks it is satirical and funny and will actually help Obama. I agree in some ways, but I worry about the stupid people who don't actually read the NYer but just see the cover and will think it is confirming that he is Muslim. [ Reply | More

honestly, the most offensive part of it to me was the Michelle Obama caricature. her face in the cartoon is so accurate but it is only in that cartoon context would her face be interpreted as angry. But New Yorker male writers have always struck me as being somewhat misogynistic yet free from scrutiny to do what they want because they are at "the bastion of liberalism". i used to work at conde nast. i just feel that the New Yorker can be dismissive of minorities and women (unless you are slim, pretty, white and very quiet - then you are invited to the party as ornaments). i think the big "liberal show" they put on is only partially sincere and valid. ^^^ if you were "fat, pretty and white" then I bet you would be seen as loud and obnoxious. now, your "not quiet" personality is, to them, I am ethnic white and they were nice to me when I was cleaned up. hated me on the softball field (I was dressed like a boy and verrryy dark from the sun and a really, really good softball player) and then hated me (I mean just really mean for no reason) when I was really fat and pregnant. some of them also were surprised that i was playing as a employee of conde nast. they seemed to mistake me, at first, as someone who had been recruited from the park because there was not enough people. anyone who says liberals can't be prejudice really has no idea what it is like to have darker skin (and i am not even that dark, except in the summer). but, then again, very few of you care either, which is why the problem persists....and why we have geniuses like david remnick making such hideously hurtful mistakes...y'all just don't give a shit and pat yourselves on the back for being liberal - i am still a liberal but i totally understand those few minorities who are brave enough to turn conservative... sorry - my baby is making it hard for me to type. what i was trying to say is -they were verrry nice to me when i was cute, but had no qualms and showing contempt when (for different reasons) i looked less cute (dirty and dark from summer softball, pregnant, etc.). it was only a couple of them but i felt as though they were coming from a culture where it was okay to not even pretend to be nice. i can't explain it well, i guess...
