i planned for 10 yrs to open a shop. saved and saved. now i find that it's a hobby for really all of them. the rents and minimum labor (like one hourly worker) are 50% of gross sales- factor in wholesale inventory costs-- and i'm paying for the work and to not be with my DB [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i knew rents were extremely high. i just kept thinking someone some of them had a 'following' - i had to believe some of them made at least $20K a year profit. can't find a one who makes that. [ Reply | More

I used to consult (for free) to small businesses and you are right. The only cute shop that I remember made any $ was doing a lot of business online. They also did trunk shows (I think that's what they are called?). The shop itself was a loss leader. [ Reply | More

is this in manhattan or somewhere else? i think too many people who want to opne small shops have limited retail experience and don't know how much below the line expenses can add up or how much turnover you need in order to make a profit. that being said, there ARE small shops that do make a profit.
