i have a long time friend (17 years) who is incredibly self absorbed. it is always a crisis and always about her. never asks about me or anyone else. if I try to steer conversation away from her, it goes back or her eyes glaze over. i am passively agressively avoiding her. do I confront or just sort of let it go? I'd like to keep friendship, but I am sick of talking about her. happy to support her in good times and bad but she just seems so selfish and self absorbed to me [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

how old are you? I wonder bc I notice with each decade I become less patient with these kinds of "friends." What do you get from this relationship? Maybe this is just a "fun" friend who entertains you but whom you cannot rely on for anything? That is legit as long as the friend does not take too much out of you. Don't put yourself out for this person though, since you seem to know you won't find that kind of effort in any way reciprocated. [ Reply | More ]

i agree - keep interactions to dinner / drinks or collective social gatherings as opposed to each other's homes. Treat her like almost a work freind [ Reply | More ]

i have a friend like this but she lives out of town. i call her a couple of times a year and listen to how stressful and more important her life is than mine is. and we get off the phone and i realize that she knows nothing about me. i don't know what i would do if i had to see her regularly. as it is, i only return a call from her if i'm ready to listen. and i guess i don't consider her a real friend - even though we've been friends for 18yrs [ Reply | More ]
