Therapist moms: today I was in a 3-way discussion w/ dd's (age 15) therapist. Therapist has her office in her home. Dd has seen her for about 2 years. Dd got upset, wanted to leave, therapist tried to calm her down, then she suggested that dd go lie down on her bed, which is in a separate room. I really think this is outside the boundaries of a patient/therapist relationship. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i am a therapist, and it would make me feel uncomfortable doing this. your dd is crossing into a personal space of therapist, which I don't agree with. but sometimes, even with codes of ethics, etc, therapists have different standards because of circumstances. Completely wrong? not sure but not necessarily OK. [ Reply | More ]

thank you -- I want to send an email to the therapist telling her this is not ok, but dh says I'm over-blowing the situation. [ Reply | More ]

i wouldnt do this in an email though. talk to her. explain that you want therapist to be there for your dd but that you don't want to personalize the relationship. honestly, if the therapist can't tolerate your dd being upset in the room, which is the place for your dd to explore different emotions (esp painful ones), I'd be questioning whether to use this therapist further. I have been questioning this for about a year, but dd is attached to this therapist, so I can't just fire her. [ Reply | More ]

i would talk to dd about how you are concerned that the therapist couldn't handle when your dd was upset and you want your dd to have a place to explore different emotions. you worry that your dd isn't getting support she needs. or, start looking for new therapist and ask this therapist to terminate properly with your dd.
