dc starting 1st grade, private school. spoke with principal about my concerns regarding a specific teacher and asked that dc be placed in a different class. principal said she can't promise anything and he could be placed anywhere. she, understandably, doesn't allow parents to request teachers. if your dc was placed in a class with a teacher who has a terrible reputation for shouting and speaking nasty/hastily to the kids, would you strongly consider transfering dc out before starting school? not tt. more like 3rd tier. wwyd? It's tough. You made your wishes known. If your dc gets placed in the class, first see if there is a problem. If there is a problem and its big enough - then ask to be transfered. Be calm, have your facts not your emotions with you. Don't leave the school. Every child gets a bad teacher once in their life. [ Reply | More ]

The way you need to phrase your requests is -- dc needs a calm, quiet atmosphere, otherwise he can get upset in class. Which teacher do you think would best suit his needs? That's the way to play the game. [ Reply | More ]

first off..You should learn NEVER to listen to hearsay. Many parents that I find that don't like a teacher (when others like the same teacher)feel this way because their kid is a PITA and has been getting in trouble. They also baby their kids and don't want to hear that their angels are doing anything wrong. From my experience, 1st graders will challenge a teacher. The teacher needs to be firm with them. If raising their voice as a last resort is needed so be it. Don't Poo-poo a teacher esp. to a principal without personal experience..just makes you look like a PITA [ Reply | More ]

No, twice growing up I ended up in the class with the teacher with that type of reputation. These teachers ended up being two of the best I ever had. [ Reply | More ]
