Don't give him the diaper. Instead take him to the potty and don't offer him an alternative. If he messes himself, clean him up and remind him to use the potty next time. [ Reply | More ]

what if he holds it and becomes very constipated? [ Reply | More ]

Talk to your pediatrician. But mine felt that the risk of a child willfully becoming dangerously constipated is small and completely overblown. She feels that the consumer products industry has tried to extend life usage of diapers by presenting a remote medical risk as a common and serious fall out of potty training. [ Reply | More ]

np: this happened with us. DS was 4 and we went totally cold turkey on the diapers (we had tried several times prior but he absolutely refused to train). He got the pee part down the first day w/ no accidents, but held the poop for days. We ended up having to do an enema and then he was totally fine--completely done, night & day, no accidents, relieved & happy. I wish it had gone differently and I still feel that somehow I screwed up. But I did the same approach (tried when initially showing interest) w/ #2 and she was trained--pee & poop--before 2.5. try offering an M&M, keep a bowl of them and let him know that they are for him when he uses the potty [ Reply | More ]

chocolate ice cream, chocolate candy, sticker and computer game (all of them) for each #1 & #2 worked for me. but they failed the first few times, so... don't know what to tell you. [ Reply | More ]

I personally think it's when dc is "ready". ds #1 trained easily at 3 and dc#2 is almost 4 and still has "poop" accidents. [ Reply | More ]
