England Mom: I feel like in the UK mom's are not as vilified for having help with the kids, the house, etc. Do you see more guilt here associated with having help? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yes, if you're a sahm. But...who cares? I think if you're a good mom and spend quality time with your kids, but need the extra hands to make your life more manageable - do what you need to do. [ Reply | More ]

There is a difference. In London, the 'help' is an extra pair of hands and the mums are very visible and hands on. In NYC, the 'help' is more visible than the moms, regardless of whether the moms work. This is why the UK moms are not as vilified. Also, when I lived in London (from 1993-2006) I knew very few moms who had full on careers, thus they were more present. [ Reply | More ]

We lived in London from 99-2003. It was my real first experience with having a sitter since my son was only 12 months when we moved there and we had a lot of family help before. It was a great experience because everyone used a sitter and not as much gulit or "indulgent" feeling. I had a sitter two afternoons a week though I did not WOH when we lived there. My children had such a great relationship with our sitter. [ Reply | More ]

in real life, i know many sahms and wohms who have cleaning and babysitting help. nobody really cares one way or the other. it's only in the alternate universe of urbanbaby that people care. [ Reply | More ]
