Little sister is coming tomorrow to watch the DC while we are on a vacation. She's great, but the stress will come when we get back and she starts to cry because she is now 38, single, no prospects, and wants a child. Last time I told her to have one if she wants one and figure out the rest later. I don't know what to do this time, and I am pretty sure it will come up. Suggestions ? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

stop torturing your sister by asking her to watch your kids while you vacation with your dh? [ Reply | More ]

there's a difference b/t seeing her nephews and babysitting while you go on romantic get aways with dh. i babysat for my sister all the time when she and her dh travelled but i wasn't traumatized by it - never broke down crying over it. maybe your sister doesn't want to be put in that position. she cries about it on a Tuesday, when she babysits, if she reads an article about infertility, when she saw Martha Stewart's kid on Oprah the other day. This is not a situation specific thing, it will just be another situation. [ Reply | More ]

there's nothing you can do, and her time is running out. Just be sympathetic. If she really wanted it, she would find a way to make it happen. [ Reply | More ]

Should I just reiterate that I think she should just have one ? I feel that whatever I say I'm being irresponsible. [ Reply | More ]

I would leave it be, unless she brings that idea up specifically. She has to know that it's an option already. Just listen to her and sympathize. [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand the question, rather recently, ie within last 2-3 years (I don't really remember), and one is in the process now. But what do you mean how? [ Reply | More ]

If I were her I'd adopt as a single. My sister went through that period. She was in her early 30's, no marriage prospects, working with babies during the day and just absolutely desolate wanting a child. She ended marrying a guy after a 6 week engagement--sweet guy, but very, very dim and not able to hold down a job. Of course two years later they divorced and she became a single mom. It just seems like it would be easier to adopt (or do DS) and then see how it plays out. [ Reply | More ]
