I wonder if I should be applying for K for my DD this fall....she's starting preK at a lovely K-8 school, but tested really well this year (99's on ERB, OLSAT and SB). I hate to move her for '09 when she's starting a new school in '08, but I wonder if I should be trying for these so-called "TT" schools for her. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Why the rush to do PK? And did you apply to some of the top (if not TT) ongoings with PKs? Why did you have her take ERB when it's not nec for PK? [ Reply | More ]

OK...no rush to do pre K, she's 4 and a half and needs to be in school so she's going to pre K in the fall. I can't keep her home at age 4 and a half! I only know of one TT ongoing w/ prek and that's HM and she was waitlisted, and she took the ERB two months ago because I'm thinking of applying her for other schools for K, which is what I'm asking about. Just wondering. Did you not do preschool? Because most kids do PK at preschool. I just think sending a child to different schools in successive years if not totally necessary is tough. Also you won't get much support for the process with your K-8 and dd will have to skip a lot of school in the fall to do all the playdates, etc. Meaning she won't be able to acclimate really well. Good points, all. This will be her first year of real school. She did a separation program last year twice a week but not at a school that had a real Pre K attached. [ Reply | More ]

This again? There is still active thread on this a mile long, go read it. If you wanted TT why did you apply to preK at all? Other than HM none of the TT schools have it. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Sorry...what does that thread start with so I can find it? To answer your question about preK, she is too young for K this year and is ready for school so we sent her to Pre K. I can't keep her home another year and the private K's are very strict about their age cut-offs. [ Reply | More ]

I would. If current school is not academically rigorous or has peers at her level. [ Reply | More ]

how can I tell if they are academically rigorous at the Pre-K level? [ Reply | More ]

who would want academic rigor in pre-k? The kids are FOUR. they should be gaining a love of learning, and learning to be independent and to get along with others. [ Reply | More ]

OP: yes this is my point exactly. The previous poster said I should move DD if the current school isnot academically rigorous enough, and I'm asking how can I tell at the Pre K level. [ Reply | More ]

You can't but you can do research on the upper levels. Talk to parents with kids in grades 5 - 8. Find out which ongoing schools they go to. Look at their website, do a search on it on UB and other boards. You can get a general sense of whether you think it's a fit. If it is, then don't get swayed by the brand name thing. You can always apply her for 9th. Let her be. If you really think she won't thrive, then consider the move. [ Reply | More ]

I think that poster was assuming that you want TT for K b/c you are afraid that she is "to smart" for the kids at her school and that you want academic rigour. I think the truth is there are plenty of exceptionally smart kids at almost all of the NYC privates today and if you like the philosophy of the school she is enrolled at and you think she will be happy there, you should leave her there and not apply out at this point. You said it ends at 8th grade, so you already know she will go somewhere else for high school and you can wait and decide when you really know what kind of school is right for her where to apply when she is in middle school. OR: oh, I assumed the prek is an ongoing. If stand alone, then she has to apply to ongoings anyway. [ Reply | More ]

>I'm not talking about academic rigor or intellectual peers for prek or K. But if it goes up to higher grades, it will make a diff. Do you know how many parents post here about "my very smart kid at 2nd tier or 3rd tier school is languishing. waiting for others to catch up and dislikes school now. we liked the school feel and community and how it wasn't stressful, but we are now looking to move dc to TT." hijack: we are in a similar position. Our db in in pre-K of a K-8 school but we think of applying out in the fall. How easy is it to move? I was always assuming the school will give us a hard time if we want to leave and the TT will not take us seriously. Any advice? [ Reply | More ]

You apply, explain to the current school why as you need their cooperation with school reports, and hope for the best. What else can you do? [ Reply | More ]

OP: This is exactly my concern. Do you think I should be diong it now at the K level because that is a natural entry point? Or should I let DD stay at her new school for a few years rather than switching her right after she starts? DD may be very bright but she is emotionally immature and does not separate well. Going to school is a big deal and I'm not sure if I should be uprooting her after only 1 year. [ Reply | More ]

If your DD is emotionally immature and does not separate well, odds of TT acceptance are not very high as they generally want mature kids. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I think she will be fine and I think she is on par with her age. It's just that she is so mature academically, it's out of synch. She reads at a 1st grade level but is a 4 year old in her heart. I doj't think she comes off as especially imature, I just didn't want to put her into K as teh youngest child for her first school experience, especially since wecan afford private. That's all I'm saying. [ Reply | More ]

Easier to move now than later. TTs have few spots, if at all, later and you can't apply into every grade. I'd think it'd be harder to change after investing so many years at this ongoing. [ Reply | More ]

OP will have to change for 9th since school is K-8. And there is a danger of ruffling feathers with the current school and then having to stay. But if her heart is set on TT, she should go for it. I would not apply to 10+ schools though, that is way too disruptive. [ Reply | More ]

I would try to move her next year for K. This is the main entry point for most TTs. Also, there are many more excellent choices for girls than boys. Yes, it will be a bit tough, but kids are actually quite resilient at this age. [ Reply | More ]

if you like the school you've enrolled her in, why are you changing? Look deep and decide if you think it's about having a shot at more status and bragging rights? the truth is a high-scoring dc will do very well at any private. you should be figuring out which school is the best fit for her, not which school is the best to drop in conversation later on. it ws not a legitimate question. It was an annoying, patronizing, obnoxious lecture from someone so clueless about who they are that they have to take on the tone of an advice collumnist or a woman's magazine writer. Drop the condescending tone. [ Reply | More ]

np; ITA. Before UB/YB split, there was at least one or two posts a day on moms with very smart kids at 2nd tier schools who were looking to move kids to TTs later on. These people liked their original 2nd tier schools for geography/philsophy/feel of community, but as their kids got older, and their kids weren't engaged enough/academically stimulated enough due to slower class in general, they sought out an option to move. Don't think it was about ego. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks....I guess I don't want to find myself in that same circumstance, knowing how hard it is to move between K and 6th, but also not wanting to uproot DD without just cause. i guess in the end I will go ahead and get the applications and start the process, knowing I can pull out before the December deadlines and only lose my application fees. Wait, you'd pull her out of school before she's admitted elsewhere? Does she have a good public option or repeat prek? [ Reply | More ]

My dc is at Grace which we've found to be a quite academically challenging preK-8 (ramping up gradually). 6th grade chemistry is more than I had in high school. [ Reply | More ]
