while I'm on the hospital issue, it is now virtually impossible to distinguish a doctor from a nurse from an orderly from the person making floral deliveries (except they usually have flowers !) in a hospital. I'm not saying that nurses should wear that old white hatted outfir and doctors need a white coat and a stethescope, but jeez ! How do you know who's who anymore ? Everyon's in mauve or aqua scrubs ! It's so true. My dh is a surgeon, and for the reason you cite, it's a problem. A female co-surgeon of his was asked to change a bedpan recently. One clue: if they are not the plain blue/aqua scrubs, the person is probably not a dr. Docs don't wear pink, cartoons, mauve, etc. The doctors wear scrubs in surgery and ties or, for women, nice clothes, with a white coat in clinic still. But the nurses, compared to the old days, look like slobs, imho. Its like they wear their pajamas to work and never bother to run a brush through their hair. It's disgusting. In the old days, at least they looked sanitary. [ Reply | More ]

To me it just seems sort of unsafe. In a crisis, who do you try to get ? And what's wrong with allowing patients and families to easily discern who does what job ? stupid... [ Reply | More ]

agreed. And according to dh and his co-workers, patients are always making assumptions (both ways) based on gender. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know! DH is too young; not around for uniforms. But, I think the uniforms were good. And, b/c I'm such a girl in these ways, so much more aesthetically appealing than universal pj's! :) [ Reply | More ]

My MIL made an interesting point that she always sees people eating lunch in restaurants in their scrubs. She said she thought the point was that the clothes are sanitary but if they're eating in them and then returning to work, how clean can they be? It made me laugh. [ Reply | More ]
