just visited friend in hospital after birth of baby. A young woman came in in shorts and flip-flops and said she was with the medical school and did we mind hearing about a study they were doing blah blah blah. A medical student, dressed like a lifeguard, 12 hours post-partum to discuss a study ! Then girlfriend told me she was the third person to come in asking about a study. Is this common ?! ^^ PS This is NOT a teaching hospital (where you would sort of expect that in a way, no ?) [ Reply | More ]

if it was not a teaching hospital, it was prob not a med student, more likely a research assistance (no med student would dress like that). I don't think asking about participation in a research study is terrible though - how else will they get postpartum subjects? [ Reply | More ]

No, I have no issue with asking about participation in studies, but it seems like you should be allowed a bit of "down-time" or - since we are all out of the hoospital before you know it - some coordination so you don't have a constant stream of people would be nice. [ Reply | More ]

this is not a teaching hospirtal. When my friend asked that she come back later after the baby was finished trying to nurse and after her guests left she seemed to be unhappy with that response. I just feel like that time is private and special. [ Reply | More ]

thats too bad, because you are affecting the education of someone that might be taking care of you or your kids in the future, besides, med students are an important part of the medical team, and are often the "eyes and ears" that pick up problems first off. [ Reply | More ]

that being established, why was she there and who approves this ? Do you think the hospital is making money in some way by patient participation so they allow it ? [ Reply | More ]

all hospital studies are approved by an internal review board. Whether the hospital is making money depends on what kind of study/who is funding it. [ Reply | More ]

This is horrifying. I didn't realize the liberties that occur when you give birth in a teaching hospital...20 year old med. students in and out of my room...guessing about what stage of labor I was in (and being wrong). I will never be treated for obstetrical issues in a teaching hospital again - and I'm from Boston where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting one. [ Reply | More ]

where exactly are you running into 20 year old med students? The youngest would be at most in their mid 20's, and many are older... [ Reply | More ]

This is your defense of the intrusion of my privacy while giving birtht o my first child (and no epidural)? Okay, they were 24 not 20. Better now? [ Reply | More ]

part of going to a teaching hospital is participating in the teaching-in exchange you get more exposure to cutting edge medicine, etc. Its your choice, just as is having an epidural. [ Reply | More ]

They should have raised the issue of the studies when she pre-registered at the hospital or engaged the OBs to introduce the topic weeks ago. [ Reply | More ]
