9 m/o dd is a good napper and sleeps through the night (8pm to 6:30/7am) but will not settle herself down at night. have a bedtime ritual with reading, songs, low lights, but inevitably she freaks when we leave the room. have gone on walks lately in good weather and she drifts off, but i know this is a bad habit. not sure i can handle CIO. ideas? is it a problem for you? clearly she knows how to put herself to sleep if she's sleeping through adn good for naps. so the only real concner for bedtime is whether its wokring for you, andif the walks help, adn she still sleeps through, i don't think its a problem for now. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I suppose the problem is that it takes her 30-45 minutes to calm down and drift off without a walk. usually lots of tears, and we have to soothe and settle her repeatedly. the walks are definately not a problem, give me and DH some time together, but i dont think we can continue them every night into the fall. OP: we have tried moving it around a bit, but right around 7:30/8 she shows all the signs - rubbing her eyes, getting cranky, pulling blanket/stuffed animal up to her face, etc. [ Reply | More ]

You've just found your problem. Bedtime is way too late. You never wait until db acts tired - by then they are overtired and frustrated and have a terrible time falling asleep. Bedtime should be 7 pm at the absolute latest [ Reply | More ]

OP: I suspect this might be true. when I am home I try to be more consistant about putting her down earlier, regardless if she shows these signs. however i travel a lot for work and dh seems to hold out for these signs before putting her down. I will discuss with him and maybe aim for an earlier bedtime. sadly, both of us work so this means we have less time with her at night, but clearly it is better she get the sleep she needs.
