Trigger: my friend was fretting over how her dc is slow and not smart bec he's not reading, etc. and I said kids are not expected to read until much later and reading at 4yo doesn't mean anything. She said you say things like that bec your dc is reading and you dont' know what you are talking about. See? You can't win. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Why did you post this? what are you hoping for in response? A reading debate? Sympathy? [ Reply | More ]

Sorry if I touched a nerve but this is UB and most posts are about rude friends who say stupid stuff about their not-reading dc's. If you have a reader, there is nothing you can say right. [ Reply | More ]

What? Of course you can. That is what friends to, they support each other. They somehow find the right thing to say when their friend is struggling, or they manage to listen and give a hug if that is what is needed. It is not based on your childs reading level. [ Reply | More ]

Really? I have met a few over the years. They just like the wallow in their misery and no amount of encouragement helps. [ Reply | More ]

I feel sorry for the kid because her mom (OP's friend) is a freak. [ Reply | More ]

maybe she thinks this because she is always around people who are 'casually mentioning' that their dc is reading...and maybe some are, and maybe some are saying their dc is 'reading' because they recognize the words 'stop' and 'no'. Moms love to brag or sometimes they use terms very loosely. This one mom friend of mine always talked about what a great swimmer her dc is...then we went swimming together and her dc can't swim at all....maybe her definition of swimming is splashing in the kiddie pool but mine is being able to stay afloat without the use of a floatation device [ Reply | More ]

I can assure you that is not the case with me. I didn't tell her my dc is reading. I know some people use very creative definitions but this is not the case. Some people, no matter what, are competitive. [ Reply | More ]

You know your dc, but you don't know other dc's who can really read. Pick up a book they've never read before and read it and comprehend it (after reading it aloud, summarize the story to their friends). You know, some kids do read early - not that it's a big deal. [ Reply | More ]

your friend sounds like a wacko. She lacks common sense if she thinks a dc should be reading by 4yr old. She should read up on the subject and see that many dc don't start reading until 5-7 yr old. Nothing wrong with being a late starter. By the 3rd grade many kids are pretty much on equal ground. I feel sorry for her kid if she will put pressure to be the first or best [ Reply | More ]

That is so crazy. I had trouble reading in first grade. I got a teacher I love, learned, and eventually met Ramona Quimby, Age 8, my first chapter book, in third grade. Then, I never put books down. I definitely wasn't reading at 4, but I still had fun at school. If you don't allow your kid to love school, they'll never love learning. Anyway, FWIW, I guess I'm "slow" by your friend's standards, but I did eventually eek out Harvard degree, and a fantastic career, so I'm pulling through all right, nevertheless. I hope, for her kid's sake, she calms down already. [ Reply | More ]
