OK, with PS234 turning people away saying that K in Not required in nyc (its not) - do you think that is the wave of the future? That as public schools become better and better and therefor more and more crowded that NYC might simply eliminate K to solve the space problem? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No, because the national trend is mandatory full day K [ Reply | More ]

Is it? I thought most K programs were half day? [ Reply | More ]

Do you think 234 should do 1/2 day K and include more children or turn away? [ Reply | More ]

np. i think they will limp along and use trailers, etc., until the new beekman school is finished, which will alleviate some of the problem. [ Reply | More ]

Do you mean they will accept the children currently on a waitlist for K in September and not turn anyone away? [ Reply | More ]

if they use trailers, yes. the other rumor is that they will send ps89 ms students to another building and put more 234 k classes in 89. either way, the dcs will stay in the neighborhood is my guess. [ Reply | More ]

NP and I'm not putting much stock in the middle school rumor. Some want the middle school that shares a building with PS3 to move to that building too. The problem with that is - D2 needs MORE middle school spots not a reshuffling. So the new space should be new middle school, leaving the others to stay put, kwim? [ Reply | More ]

agree, that would be just a stop-gap solution. long-term we need more schools. write to bloomberg (and scott stringer and joel klein) and tell him NOT to sell 75 morton st. to a developer but to turn it into a middle school. that's a start. [ Reply | More ]

They are lame ducks. But, I am a fan of both. As I mentioned before - the schools have been improving to the point they are now suffering. [ Reply | More ]

bloomie gets a lot of crap here, and i'm not a fan of the schools reports, etc., but on balance i think he's done something positive for nyc public schools. he truly believes in trying to turn them around. and while he may be a lame duck, i think he wants to do the right thing. it doesn't hurt to send a postcard. i think bloomberg could have tried even harder to make education a priority. look at the billions going to yankee stadium! and while he helped broker deals with some developers, there are many more he let off the hook. [ Reply | More ]

The thing is, only few schools in NYC are really overcrowded. There are plenty of schools well below capacity, but nobody wants to send kids there. So there is real imbalance between supply and demand. [ Reply | More ]

But that is how it goes all over the country. People move to the towns with the good schools. The poor towns have crappy schools. [ Reply | More ]

In a lot of places all around the country, K is indeed still only half day. [ Reply | More ]

amazing how K's are turning kids away but the K near me (D1) doesn't have enough kids and the DOE made the school into an elem. and middle school to occupy the empty space if not they would have to close it down all together [ Reply | More ]

I'm talking about PS 34..we aren't there (wouldn't send my kids there) but that is our zone school. I know teachers in that school and they wouldn't even send their kids there [ Reply | More ]

Its the really good public schools that are having the problem Catch 22 - the publics are improving and more and more people are sending their dc and they get more and more crowded. [ Reply | More ]

or: exactly..the really good publics are having to turn ppl away while the crappy schools aren't doing well at all. It will take yrs before PS 34 (school I'm talking about) would even be considered good. It's not happening. I'm 40 yr old and this school has been crap since I was a kid [ Reply | More ]

I think it is unrealistic to even hope that every nyc public school turns into a good one. [ Reply | More ]

of course it's unrealistic but when the city (Manhattan) has the money it does, it's a shame that your zone school is failing. The only school in D1 that was eh OK when I was growing up was PS 110..I'm glad to see it's much better now. If only the others would follow [ Reply | More ]
