Argh. So many parents are holding back their ds so they will be the biggest and smartest. My ds with an April birthday will be one of the youngest boys in his class with kids almost a year older then he is. Even with his peers he is physically not as strong or fast. He will be the slowest boy...:-( [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I don't think you have to worry with an April birthday. My ds has a mid-November b-day in NYC public. He's among the youngest and it was fine. Your April b-day kid is nearly a year older than him, and lots of kids in privates who are older are a year behind. [ Reply | More ]

^^^what I mean is that someone always is going to be the youngest, and being the youngest with an April birthday, when there will definitely be kids younger than him in the grade, isn't that big of a deal. [ Reply | More ]

OP- So he didn't turn 5 until he was 3 months into K? I think it really only matters in relation to the kids in his class & sports teams, not to other states, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Right, but I'm saying that April is not going to make him the youngest -- there will definitely be boys in May and June at least, since not every parent of a summer birthday boy is going to hold them back. My ds is far more likely to be among the youngest in his grade, and it's not that big a deal. [ Reply | More ]

NP - I live in nyc and we don't really have sports teams in public schools like they do in suburbs. And who says you will always live in NYC? So the fact that the cutoff is completely out of whack with the vast majority of the country may very well factor in. [ Reply | More ]

they don't allow this with G&T do they? if so, i would think everyone would be getting their older dc's into the programs at the expense of the younger dc's. [ Reply | More ]

No, for the g&t programs in nyc you MUST adhere to the birthday cutoff dates, no exceptions. Well, I know of one with Hunter, but hunter is not a DOE g&T. [ Reply | More ]

I held my dc back. I didn't do it so he would be the biggest (he's not by a long shot) or the smartest. I did it because at four years old he was simply not ready for a 7 hour academic day five days a week. If other four year old boys are, that's great. But mine was not. [ Reply | More ]

People are doing that with girls too, not as much, but they are. My May dc will be one of the youngest in her class, but that is life. [ Reply | More ]

I think as the schools turn K into first grade, the parents respond by holding children back. I'm not sure I agree with the reasons you beleive it is happening so frequently. Society is pushing our children too hard, too fast [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, but someone has to be the youngest. I always was. But it really isn't going to matter in the long run. Keep your eye on the long term goal. Parents that hold back to be biggest and smartest aren't going to win in the long run. And that attitude will do more damage. So short sighted, if that's really why they are holding back.
