For the first time in 6.5 years of her life I full out hollered at my dd. She kept asking me to come upstairs and read to her or sit in her room or cuddle again, and full out roar. Am I a bad mom - was it awful...I never did that before. She is upstairs now, and its silent...should I check on her? Maybe its good that she has a little fear of me??? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

go upstairs. it doesnt sound like her behaviour was inappropriate, just annoying. save the hollering for when she endangers herself or others. [ Reply | More ]

No. Yelling is not great, but I have done it a few times. It actually was very effective, hate to say. [ Reply | More ]

op-i feel a thousand times better in some way and she needs to get the point that she can't negotiate everything. every meal, every trip, every outfit, every minute is a negitiation - when does it end, and how? [ Reply | More ]

When she is 25! Set your boundaries with her and stick to it. I find silence works better. I teach middle schoolers and silence them into silence. It's amazing. However, I did raise my voice at 3yo dd last night. It just happens. [ Reply | More ]

I'd leave her. She's old enough to follow up in the morning. If you go back, she'll just get what she wants. I'd say that you screamed because you need her to do x, y and z at bedtime and that you expect that from now on. You might apologize for screaming but make sure the emphasis is the change in her behavior. [ Reply | More ]

^^^fyi, I had a similar conversation with a student that pushed me a bit too far this year. It is not always bad to have conflict if you can model to them an effective way to resolve it. Everyone learns something. [ Reply | More ]
