what are the chances of getting my very smart but academically lost DD into a good private 5th grade for fall 2009? What would I have to do -- have her sit for the ERB? For 5th grade? When? And how do I possibly figure out which school would suit her? What I know is that her current zoned public school does not and may be turning her off to academics forever. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

if she is academically lost and coming fro a public her chances at a very top school are limited, are you thinking a catholic school or maybe a nice progressive co-ed? [ Reply | More ]

i don't think a top school would be right for her anyway. she needs challenge and she needs someone putting a little pressure on her, in a loving way, LOL. As it is, she's been languishing in public, waiting for the rest to catch up, daydreaming and reading. She does not try very hard at anything because she hasn't had to yet. [ Reply | More ]

^^^I should add that her report cards have been very good -- her school doesn't do "grades" so it's all narrative and the teacher last year (3rd grade) said great things about her. But her 3rd grade test scores were only so-so. [ Reply | More ]

I haven't applied an older dc so I can't help out with practical logistics. If you like coed I would say Town and Friends are great environments for a dc like that. SS reaches might be NBS and Marymount would be a very nurturing fit. Also Hewitt is NOT a house for morons as everyone on this board claims. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

also cgps. btw, i would send her to a tutor. that way it won't be you bothering her, and if she develops a good relationship, she may just get inspired. I would do this if you don't end up going private, at least twice weekly [ Reply | More ]

If she is very smart, you should try to get her into TTs for the peer group. Where are you? UWS? [ Reply | More ]

not for high school (starts in 7th grade, with admissions based on a test taken in 6th grade which your child qualifies to take if their 5th grade test scores are in the top 10%) [ Reply | More ]
