I'm disappointed that Obama campaign is asking New Yorker to apologize for the cover. Come on! Everyone who reads New Yorker gets it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

ITA. Like Bill Maher said, if you can't do satire on the cover of the NYer, where can you do it. There's an article in the Times about it -- I'm an Obama supporter, but if we can't make fun of him because he's black, that sucks. [ Reply | More ]

I agree 100%. I am once again saddened the that U.S. is so freaking humorless and moronic. If they had done a cover with Obama and his wife depicted as apes in a jungle, would you find that to be satire??? Because New Yorkers "get" that that's a stupid image some people have of blacks. And they have the intelligence to see that it would really just be satire. Sure. [ Reply | More ]

you miss the point. obamas aren't being criticized (that i've heard or read) as apes in a jungle. there are, however, whispers that they are not 'patriotic', the he was raised moslem, and that the fist jab was a terrorist sign. I'm sad about your company. I believe in first amendment rights as well as artistic expression. I believe, despite a small minority of people (whose minds would not have changed anyway no matter what), our nation has progressed so far and we are not as dumb as fear mongerers would have us. Every nation and every time satire was extinguished, it was always a dark time (oppressive) in their history. We can't pick and choose what we support to be true just bec it's our side being "hurt" (though I really don't believe Obama is hurt by this mosquito of a thing)... [ Reply | More ]

OR: I too believe in first amend. and artistic expression, however I don't think that absolves the artist (or the publisher) of responsibility for content of that "art." You suggest Americans are above this kind of fear mongering. I would counter, in the last election, roughly 80% of the people voting to re-elect Bush STILL BELIEVED that Saddam Hussein had been responsible for 9-11. Mindful of that, I don't share your faith in the public. [ Reply | More ]

To suggest that that cover had only TNY readers as its target, that the editors were unaware the cover would cause this kind of storm, suggests a naivete on their part I find hard to believe. Just like the artist described below knew painting the "Virgin Mary" then flinging elephant dung on the canvas would cause a visceral reaction. [ Reply | More ]

No. I don't think they were hoping to get the far right to read them. I think they were looking for buzz. Hell, when was the last time an issue of TNY sold out? Other than getting pictures of Brangelina's newborn, how could a magazine get this kind of press? [ Reply | More ]

Like the cover that had Hillary as Robin Hood and Rudy about to mug her? Let's see - things that Hillary had done for New York: Zero, Rudy: too much good to mention. It is not satire as much as lampoon - this is the New Yorker's way of showing how FAR ABOVE IT ALL it is. They invert the opposite of the predisposition. Get it? If you don't, relax, you are NORMAL. The rest who "get it" are overly-nuanced UWS cocktail party denizens. Believe me, you'd rather pass than join. That oh-so-controversial New Yorker cover? YAWN. [ Reply | More ]
