Is the process of HS admission as crazy/competitive as the process for K admission? Any advice? We are trying to figure out how big of a drawback a k-8 school is. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

There are almost no spots in the HS. So yes, it is impossible [ Reply | More ]

Not true. Trinity gets 60 kids for HS. [ Reply | More ]

Ok Trinity. Though that number is dubious. You won't get in to any of the SS [ Reply | More ]

maybe not all into 9th grade but 60 number is solid and yes, it does explain a lot about Trinity. No need to get dc there for LS. [ Reply | More ]

ITD. The schools expand in HS (class sz). Our K-8 always places their kids [ Reply | More ]

so then why do schools admit new kids if they don't expand? that makes no sense [ Reply | More ]

They are throwing others out. The SS begin to weed out the dcs that are not performing or struggling. They replace those spots with new dcs but there are not many spots available and not every year drops dcs [ Reply | More ]

Counsel out but also people move out of the city. This happens anywhere. How many families actually stay in the same city for 13 years in this day and age? Not that many. But TTs retain many of their kids (I guess people try to stay in NYC and get another job here rather than moving away if kids are at TTs) [ Reply | More ]

Listen I am speaking from experience past and present, there are not large numbers of spots that open up in any given grade at a TT ss you are lucky if five spots open up over 13 years. [ Reply | More ]

np: that's fine because I just want my dd in a good school. Don't care if it's TT (according to some) or not [ Reply | More ]

They are all like that, NBS CSH, Marymount, Browning you are not going to find a lot of open spaces they are just based on people being thrown out and a few that leave. There will just never be more than ten at the absolute most in the entire 13 years. If it is a question as to when to apply do it now, because your odds dwindle after K [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. I'm letting dc apply when she graduates 8th grade. She will be placed somewhere (where she's meant to go) [ Reply | More ]

Just trying to help, your dc will most likely stay in public that is what on the whole happens, but I see how you would ant to put on blinders and disagree [ Reply | More ]

I think it's bec they decide not to replace the lost seats. i am also speaking from experience. People do move out, though many/most stay, and school doesn't just fill a new seat. Mine didn't. [ Reply | More ]

after all the talk about how the TTs "counsel out" in big numbers, I find it hard to believe there are "no spots" for HS. Plus, there are still a decent number of dcs who go off to boarding school. [ Reply | More ]

WHo ever said they counsel out in large numbers? My niece went to my school only four new girls were brought in over the whole 13 years, was the same with my class when I was there. [ Reply | More ]

ask around about "counseling out" these days on UB and moms are ALWAYS complaining about it. That places like B and HM councel out 30% of entering class by K. I have no hard stats but if you believe what you read here... [ Reply | More ]

Oh please...then where do all the kids at K-8's end up? And how do schools like Town and Cathedral get their good exmissions lists if no schools accept dc's in 9th grade? Sounds to me like you're a troll looking for something to do. [ Reply | More ]

top kids will go to Trinity (most seats open) or Dalton (10-20 seats?). top kids from CGPS, Trevor, and other 2nd and 3rd tiered schools will transfer out to TTs or Stuy or Hunter and those schools will replace with non-top kids from K-8 schools. [ Reply | More ]

In high school it is about the child and the student record - so its a much more sane process. By then, you have a clue as to what type of student your child is. [ Reply | More ]

But there are no spots in the top schools and very few in the lowered tiered ones. You have to be lucky as well as v. smart. Not good odds just apply at K [ Reply | More ]

Saying there are 60 is an outright lie. It varies of course but there are classes in the SS that only take three new dcs the entire 12 years because they only get rid of three through counseling out [ Reply | More ]

Trinity takes 60 kids for 9th grade. It is a TT school. Horace Mann also takes a large-sh number and Dalton takes at least 10 for HS. Don't make statements about which you are clueless. [ Reply | More ]

just so you know, C took 2 new girls this year and S took at least 1 for 3rd grade. B actively looks for girls starting with 4th grade.....It would be improbable that these three top ss schools take only 3 new students in 13 years. We know that T takes 60 and HM starts growing in 6th grade. So perhaps C takes only 3 new kids, but it is the only tt that I know of that could possibley be doing what you say. [ Reply | More ]

our school is up to 8th grade. I didn't want a 13 yr pgrm for my kids. By the time I graduated in 8th grade I was very ready for a change of scenery. I liked co-ed for k-8 and prefer SS for HS (if that is what dc wants) [ Reply | More ]

There are plenty of spots and the advantage is that you can choose a school that is best for DCs learning ability and interests. The K-8s do a great job with exmissions and many kids at K-12 move around as well in HS. GL [ Reply | More ]
