Let's try this. What makes a private school top tier (ongoing)? Give me a definition that allows me to create a table with all the data that is necessary for a ranking. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

A bigger % of kids who are very smart (there are smart kids in every school but TTs have a bigger share of them). This allows their academic program to be more accelerated/rigorous. [ Reply | More ]

That has nothing to do with the ranking. The rankings are based solely on the percentage of kids that get into Ivy league and other highly competitive colleges. The infamous 'exmissions'. [ Reply | More ]

that's it? So that list should change every year then, right? So, what numbers would you use to categorize a school top tier? [ Reply | More ]

NO the list would not change every year. For 80 years the tt schools that are considered tt have been tt. This is not new! [ Reply | More ]

I think we are giving you those. B and C year after year produce the best results in comparison to all other schools, with a few years in the 80s going to Chapin. But B, C, Coll, Spence and Chapin are always and will always be TT schools. What else do you want? [ Reply | More ]

Yes it does, look at OR below. A TT is a school that decade after decade proves that it among all the others sned the highest % of students to the top colleges. A bad year of getting students into Harvard is always mitigated by that many more going to Yale or MIT among the absolute top schools. But yes, do the years vary at sacred heart or at others/ yep [ Reply | More ]

A 'tt' private school is a school that has proven decade after decade that colleges - HYP and other top colleges - have no problem taking an over proportionate number of students from because the education is so excellent that any student who managed to get through the HS is a going to be a guaranteed performer. so, you would tabulate the exmissions numbers, put them on a curve and the, what? Schools in the 90th percentile and up are called TT? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.14.08, 12:25 PM Flag
»
I wouldn't know how to tabulate based on %tile. But the schools are are absolutely there every year are the same because they each come within one or two students (points :-) of great exmissions for their class size, so that would be B, S, C and Collegiate, Trinity and HM. Whoever else you want to include based on 90th % you can include but those are the constants [ Reply | More ]

Don't know I imagine you go down the list and see where each falls after the best schools. I do think that the level of college acceptances varies much more year to year than among the top schools, but I have never looked. Traditionally the 2nd level was comprised of NBS CSH Dalton and Marymount and a few others below that [ Reply | More ]

I think the schools that people on UB call "2nd tier" would be those schools that generally still do very well on exmissions but either not as consistently or as extensively as the TT schools. As for 3rd tier, I think that's schools that traditionally had a student body who went to a more diverse group of colleges - with far fewer at top colleges. Schools that in the past have not been specifically geared towards really smart high- achieving kids, but more for educating a more "average" student body. Things are changing on this front as schools become more and more competetive to get into. The so-called 4th tier, I would say is comprised of new schools with little to no track record OR schools that traditionally catered (and perhaps still do) towards lower performing students (mild LD, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 07.14.08, 01:22 PM Flag

^^^ The K-8 schools's ranking is complicated by the fact that their "exmissions" is to HS (rather than directly to college). Many on UB will say that since not 100% (or close to) of their grads go on to TT HS, that by definition, they cannot be TT. [ Reply | More ]
