"The opening of the ANWR 1002 Area to oil and natural gas development is projected to increase domestic crude oil production starting in 2018. In the mean ANWR oil resource case, additional oil production resulting from the opening of ANWR reaches 780,000 barrels per day in 2027 and then declines to 710,000 barrels per day in 2030. In the low and high ANWR oil resource cases, additional oil production resulting from the opening of ANWR peaks in 2028 at 510,000 and 1.45 million barrels per day, respectively. Between 2018 and 2030, cumulative additional oil production is 2.6 billion barrels for the mean oil resource case, while the low and high resource cases project a cumulative additional oil production of 1.9 and 4.3 billion barrels, respectively." Why naive and silly? Not everyone lives in Manhattan and can rely on public transportation. It is important to show the Oil countries that we have the option of drilling else where. Don't you agree? If not totally then slightly at least! [ Reply | More ]

Right! Read the NY Times editorial Big Pander to Big Oil (June 19, 2008)--sorry, I don't know how to attach link. The oil companies already have leases to dig on dry land that they don't make use of--they are drilling in only a fraction of them. They are pressing Bush to lift the ban on offshore drilling so they can grab up the leases before Bush leaves. They should be forced to use the leases they have before being given new ones offshore. Also, as the article points out, there is no way that the country that consumes 25 percent of oil production can drill its way out of a problem when they own only 3 percent of the reserves. You are dreaming if you think the environmental risk of offshore drilling is going to give you relief at the pump.[ [ Reply | More ]

exactly. Why are some people so opposed to just admitting we created a big problem for ourselves and change is the logical and real solution for the energy problem and our security problems in the long run as well. [ Reply | More ]

np what's wrong with doing both? Why shouldn't we explore and drill for our own oil? Did you know that Cuba is negotiating with several other countries (including China) right now to drill just a few miles off of our shore anyway? I have a lot more confidence in American companies than I do in China and cuba to do it safely [ Reply | More ]

LOL! Look - I'm not saying we shouldn't be careful. I'm just pointing out that they have gotten much better at preventing spills. Drilling does not mean the earth or even the region, will be forevermore ruined. I think it's a good idea and about time we did it! [ Reply | More ]

I think the people behind Bush found some great code words to replace the words you can't say in polite company. And they played on the basest fears of many Americans about immigrants, about African-Americans, etc. (Now I don't think this is true of all Republicans or even of all Conservatives -- but I think this is true of many of the Reagan Republicans. Many of the Gingrich/Contract on America Republicans. And others.) [ Reply | More ]
