Plz try not to flame: wondering if we should apply to private schools. Not likely to get into Hunter (odds) but dc is very advanced ( started reading at 1.5yo and figured out multiplication at 2yo). Not sure if G&T/Anderson have the resources for a dc like that. Wonder if private schools might be better plus if they might give FA (maybe half) - HHI is $90k. We can't afford to homeschool as we both need to work to pay for rent, etc. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You should definitely apply to privates, but don't dismiss G&Ts either. [ Reply | More ]

Do you think G&Ts will let dc work on her own (accelerated curr.)? [ Reply | More ]

highly dubious that your dc started reading at 1.5 yo and "figured out" multiplication at 2 yo. You're living in a dreamworld. [ Reply | More ]

don't believe it, then. But dc is now 4yo and read most of cousin's books. Cousin is 12 yo. [ Reply | More ]

that is so not appropriate. do you monitor what she's reading for content? I would not let my 4 yo dd read what most 12 year old girls are reading. no way. [ Reply | More ]

np; you know, I don't think they let the 4yo read romance novels. When I was 12, I read a lot of non fiction. But this is one of the dilemmas for these kids - there is nothing "appropriate" for these kids. Yet, they do need to read. [ Reply | More ]

Of course there are appropriate books--Anne of Green Gables and Little Women come to mind. Don't be lazy. [ Reply | More ]

You can only be a book police for so long. Kids find stuff and they will read what they can get their hands on. Do you always helicopter around your kids? [ Reply | More ]

You'll get way more than 1/2 on dual income of 90K. Apply, it doesn't hurt. Just remember that you will have to apply even more broadly since you need FA. GL [ Reply | More ]

Boy or a girl? How social is your child? One tip is to look at schools with large endowments. [ Reply | More ]

I can't reply to boy or girl poster for some reason. Dd is pretty social. I do notice that she hides some things. When she was younger, she loved to "show off" but has become more shy with her skills. But she is a happy kid who gets along with others. [ Reply | More ]

You should look at the girls' schools then. Look at Spence, Chapin, Brearley, Nightingale Bamford, Marymount. I would also check out Dalton, but if she "hides" things if may not be the best fit, but you never know so look at it. I'd look at CGPS as they are generous with aid and have a good student-teacher ratio. Are you apply this fall? GL [ Reply | More ]

my dd is gifted and we had this same problem with her "hiding her skills" as you say b/c she was tired of always knowing everything..she wanted to stick out less...now that she is in a gifted school with other kids like her and the curriculum is more challenging she is really "out and proud":) [ Reply | More ]

first of all, let your kid take the tests and take it from there. Chances are your genius child is not as genius as you think he is. [ Reply | More ]

Not caring about the label. You are right, dc might bomb whatever test. But I know dc is a diff kinda kid, too. When we had a family reunion in CA, we all went to a theme park. Tickets cost $12 per adult and there were 12 adults. Dc just had 3rd birthday and said we needed the correct amount of money. I'm not saying that makes dc a genius but I know our zoned school is not an option also. [ Reply | More ]

I think you should apply to Dalton. My dc is not as advanced as yours but is similar. Dalton gave a very generous FA. I think my dc would have suffered from more rigid curriculum (single sex or traditional) and is able to fit in well despite differences academically. [ Reply | More ]

I have heard Trinity likes kids like yours. Heard it from a teacher of pre-k at a very highly regarded preschool (and she would know, she sees where the kids in her class place). Trinity seems to appreciate very, very bright extremely advanced dcs. [ Reply | More ]

But Trinity is pretty traditional in curriculum. Also, culturally, more conformist. I don't see how a dc like that would do well there. [ Reply | More ]

your child is clearly gifted. are you in NYC? try NEST downtown - they are a g&t and I believe public, and i have a friend who has 2 dc's there and loves it. my dd is gifted and goes to long island school for the gifted - but we are in LI....Montessori also works very well for gifted kids BTW [ Reply | More ]

We visited a district G&T (ps 153) that was very, very open to accelerating kids by jumping them ahead in grades for specific subjects. Open up as many options as you can. Citywide G&T is likely better able to accommodate than a zoned school, even though if your child, is in the 'profoundly gifted' range is likely to be well beyond others in the same class. Apply to privates as well and take the best option available. [ Reply | More ]
