DH's aunt is a partner in a large law firm in Chicago. She has told me point blank that she is hesitant to hire even very exceptionally qualified women associates because she assumes they will get married/have babies/want different working arrangements or quit after she has invested time and money in training them. She and I have had SO many "spirited discussions" about this. She never had children and I SAH. She also tends to hire only male assistants for the same reason. It's infuriating. well, if you just work the numbers you must agree that she is right. Is it the right attitude when it comes to hiring folks? No, of course not. [ Reply | More ]

of course it the right attitude. you just said if you do the numbers it makes sense. do now we are sacrificing sense, numbers, and profit to be nice instead of accurate. So sad. [ Reply | More ]

If you are a boss and are responsible for the numbers then it is hard, if you are not the owner that is. [ Reply | More ]

then it is time to look for a new job with a better employer. If you don't want to support this BS you don't have to. [ Reply | More ]

how can you all say she is right?? People bring different things to a work place. It should not be all men wihout obligations. Women bring different, important qualities, and women with children do too. Everybody, men and women, should be given a certain amount of time off for caring for family (maternity leave, helping sick parent, partner, etc). Your aunt is wrong to look at numbers only. She should be implemntaing a fair way for all people to be able to have healthy lives. [ Reply | More ]

np: Don't people working for law firms have to bill some ungodly number of hours every year? Kind of hard to have work-life balance while doing that. [ Reply | More ]

a dh: I wonder what percentage of exceptionally qualified male associates stay on past certain points. I bet that the "loss" of young associates is not that different -- male vs female -- just she notices the women because the reason they leave reconfirms her preconception. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. There's lots of moving around in law these days. DH's aunt is well aware of this fact but prejudges women and I hope she gets sued for discrimination. [ Reply | More ]
