Have been offered a job in Stamford. We currently live in Cobble Hill, and DH will continue to work in midtown. DCs are not school age yet, but we are thinking about moving to the burbs for the schools (and the space and the shorter commute for me). Which burbs should I look at (for 3 bedroom houses in the 750 range)? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Thanks. The listings in those towns seem so pricey. [ Reply | More ]

You will have more options in Mamaroneck than Larchmont and Rye and it has the same schools anyway as all of Larchmont and part of Rye. [ Reply | More ]

Friend just moved to Rye Neck, but paid in the 800s. I don't know what it looks like there but the schools are great. I don't know housing prices - your range is low for Westchester probably - but you can look into Katonah, Mt Kisco, Mamoroneck and Stamford. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah....I think our range is low. The schools in Stamford seem not so great. Ditto Norwalk which we can also afford. [ Reply | More ]

It is so ridiculous, isn't it! New Jersey is a little cheaper. I read on UB that Stamford isn't great, but the people I know in real life that went to HS there all went to top colleges. Ditto New Rochelle. [ Reply | More ]

We thought about Jersey but that was before this job offer. I've been reading about Stamford schools on Great Schools this morning and they seem okay, but not great and the real estate is pretty pricey. [ Reply | More ]

Rye Neck schools are excellent, I think Katonah also has good schools. [ Reply | More ]

We had the same deal - dh got a job in Stamford and we lived in Park Slope and I worked in NYC. We live in Rye Brook. I like the area but it was a huge change from NYC. Nothing is walking distance. At the end of the day, we are in a nice town with great schools so I guess that is what matters most. GL [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I really want to be able to walk to something somewhere, but maybe that's a pipe dream. The thing that panics me the most is the idea of finding a nanny who would drive my kids around. In NYC, no one drives them but me! [ Reply | More ]

I would have a big issue with that. Tried the nanny thing and it did not work out so now doing day care - much happier. I have a shopping center about 1.75 miles from my house and hen I get antsy I do walk there and do errands and stuff but I think I am the only one that woudl even consider doing that. others would think I was insane! I'm leaning that way too, but have 2 kids and it seems like a nanny would be more cost effective than daycare. [ Reply | More ]

I would think it would make more sense. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it since i only have one it's fine. GL with finding a place. Dh did the commute from Brooklyn to Stamford for a few months and it was brutal! [ Reply | More ]

It seems brutal. My DH keeps saying I could just commute until we find a place....can't imagine that. [ Reply | More ]

That's what my dh did - he did the commute for 5 months. The really bad part I was home with a newborn. The commute was anywhere from 1:15 on a great day and 2:45-3:00 on a bad day. He drove - if taking the trian obviously much more consitent and you could sleep but still a long day. GL, I'm sure you'll come up with a good plan. [ Reply | More ]

If you are looking for houses in the $700's range I think you could find a 3 bedroom in that range in Larchmont (I saw a few before the market started to come down), Rye Brook (usually need updating), Mamaroneck. There aren't a ton of them but if you look you'd find something. [ Reply | More ]
