NP: I also grew up here, and hate what Manhattan has become. Some parts of the outer boroughs are very old NY-like, though. I moved to Brooklyn to the dreaded Park Slope, and although it is also gentrified, I still find it to be like the old NY that I knew and loved. [ Reply | More

Maybe harshly put, and I live in Manhatt. now, but I agree with the sentiment that the city is wonderful, and they should make sure there is a % of affordable housing for people of low incomes/artists, but it's expensive to live here comfortably with a family (as it always has been) and the world is not cheating you if you can't live here. agree. we couldn't afford what we wanted for our dc (each a room of their own, good school, vacations, etc) so we moved to the burbs. so much happier (tho now i complain about the cost of gas and oil) [ Reply | More

excuse me? How are the burbs any more affordable than living in the city? How long is my commute going to be to find a place for $3000/month in the burbs? Include maintenance of one or two cars, a couple hundred extra for a monthly train ticket, higher property taxes... boom. There is no checp living any where close to NYC. [ Reply | More

Also, it's important not to lose time with your kids on a communte. So if you have to work in the city, then it makes sense to me that someone would want to live there, close to their kids school so they could jet over for a school play or pick them up if they get sick or get their feelings hurt.
