my 3.5 yo has tantrums anytime we go into a store and there is some kind of toy he sees and wants. is this normal or have i spoiled him some way? TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

this is not normal. i dont use the word spoiled because its loaded. but really, it is not normal. when this happens, just walk out. every time. it will make your errands less effective in the short run but much more pleasant in the long run. he'll get the message. [ Reply | More

Mine doesn't have tantrums everytime, but he does sometimes have tantrums when there's something he wants--that seems like pretty standard 3 yo behavior [ Reply | More

I've learned to tell my kids ahead of time what to expect- it eliminates the tantrums for us. For example, "we are going into this store to buy a gift for X. You are not getting anything, but I need your help choosing something X will love." [ Reply | More
