We put a gate across db's door because we were having major issues with him going to sleep at night. he moved into a toddler bed 2 wks ago and just kept walking out- last night he did it from 8pm to 12! So tonight we put the gate up and he is sleeping. my question is should we remove it now so if he wakes during the night it is not there, or just leave it there? he has also been coming to our bed around 3:30am, but not every night. thanks so much. he will probably cry for a night or two then get the message. I would not go out cuz once he sets eyes on you it's all over. [ Reply | More ]

wow. that is very cruel. You locked your child into his room for the night? That's not right. Remove that gate, for goodness sake. Btw, yes, kids will always try to sneak into your bed at some age. It is just a phase. [ Reply | More ]

over reacting much? How is a gate any different than a crib? [ Reply | More ]

A crib prevents your child from falling out. Once you put a kid into her own bed you kind of gave her the freedom to get in and out anytime she wants. And then you put the gate up? [ Reply | More ]

please, if it was just to keep kids from falling, you would put the mattress on the floor to be done with it. The kid is used to not having complete freedom, so it's not exactly traumatic. It's not like a 2yo should have the right to wander around the house at will just because they are out of the crib. [ Reply | More ]

so if dc wants to go play in the family room, or walk around the house instead of going to bed, that's ok? [ Reply | More ]

instead of going to bed? Yes, if he keeps walking out of his room instead of going to sleep we bring him back. We never let our kids cry themselves to sleep so a gate would not be an option no matter what when it comes to getting the child to sleep. [ Reply | More ]

np: all my kids switched into a toddler bed at 18 months and we never closed the door at night. They were never brave enough to roam around in the dark. They would find their way to our bed but that's pretty much it. [ Reply | More ]
