We have a nation of Math dummies. People who can't even do simple addition and subtraction. Were we always this way? What happened? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

lol! we are the leaders in technology, finance and science. what more do you want? all these people here, primarily public school moms who are going nuts about math. really don't get the anxiety about it. most of our kids will learn enough math to do fine, and then some. the reason the US is so successsful is that we also nurture creativity. Go Singapore math! And we are leaders in technology, finance and science because of the people raised out of the US who are working at those firms. [ Reply | More ]

oh please! you are absurd. If that were true, those people would stay home and live in countries that were leaders in these fields. [ Reply | More ]

LOL - hardly "absurd" - I've been recruiting for one of those fields for a very long time. They come to US for jobs. They get prepared in math and the sciences at home, and come here and cash in. [ Reply | More ]

np - That's because (IMO of course) American kids are lazy. They can obviously do the tech & science work, but it's hard work and not sexy enough. [ Reply | More ]

its not that interesting. the technicians can be imported, so as long as we have a few, in addition to the leaders, we're good. [ Reply | More ]

yes, but they are technicians. the leaders and people with ideas are homegrown. that is the advantage of our system. develops creativity and not just math/tech knowledge. [ Reply | More ]

It's the new math, or math experience, connected math, or everyday math that is making us math retarded. [ Reply | More ]

I have no idea what you're talking about specifically. As far as my experience goes, all the college-bound high schoolers I know HAVE to take calculus by graduation. Some take it sooner than senior year, others struggle through basic calc in senior year, but all need to pass it. But obviously I only know a select group of kids. [ Reply | More ]

Um, math, even simple math, is no longer an even remotely useful or necessary for most Americans. [ Reply | More ]
