My 5 year old has been acting like he's possessed - flipping out over small things and crying and screaming...it seems to take him a long time to recover from these fits and he's also been treating 2 year old brother badly. Is this common? It seems to be getting out of hand. He does this more often around my husband who is a SAHD, less often with me. I'm getting concerned. TIA for any advice? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Don't really have advice, just wanted to say my almost five year old is a whiny beast lately and nothing I do helps. I've started ignoring her during her fits. It's very frustrating, I keep wondering where my sweet child went. . . [ Reply | More ]

is he getting enough sleep? other than that, it's pretty normal phase, on-again off again. encourage him to use his words. We got our 5 year old a giant blow up "bop buddy" he could hit when he was mad. [ Reply | More ]

thanks for the advice. Ironically he has never been a good sleeper even as a newborn, and often wakes early and isn't content until the entire family is awake too. He learned well in pre-k this past year and his teacher says he is above grade level (he reads and writes pretty well) but has always been a sensitive and somewhat cantankerous kid. Is it just personality? I get worries when he flies into these rages! [ Reply | More ]

np: Is he your oldest? My oldest--also a DS--is a little like this. He is getting a bit easier now at 6, but 5 was rough. I think kindergarten was a big change for him and he was dealing with that. It doesn't mean it's okay to be terrible to the rest of the family--he has to go to his room when he's not being civil--but I kind of understand it. He's always been sensitive and more moody than my younger one. [ Reply | More ]

yes! he is my oldest. He had some behavioral problems from time to time in pre-k, acting out, disrupting the class, but we attributed it to learning to socialize. We tried behavior charts, time outs, taking away toys/priveleges but nothing seems to work long term. [ Reply | More ]

he's got a lot of strong emotions running through his little body and he needs help working through them. it has nothing to do with academics. also, i would look into his diet -- keep a log of everything he eats for a week and write down when the fits happen. you may see a pattern. gl!
