can anyone reccomend a chess class for 4 or 5 year olds? Was going to sign up at the JCC but the class is on Wednesdays and because of the Jewish holidays this year the entire month of October is cancelled. TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My Dad taught her how to play chess and she loves it. I don't know how to play and I was going to learn but I decided it would be better to send her to a class or club with other kids and an instructor who actually likes/knows chess. [ Reply | More ]

np: Why not? It's a great game. I taught my dd to play, she likes it. What issue could you possibly have with this? [ Reply | More ]

If only the word "issue" would disappear - it is so overused. I have no Issue. I was just wondering why chess for four year olds was such a big (and money making) craze. [ Reply | More ]

Do you understand the meaning of the word? But, I can rephrase. Why do you care if parents teach their 4 yr olds chess? Or, pay to have a better player teach them? How does this differ from a gymnastics, ballet, violin, french, etc class? [ Reply | More ]

LOL! What?? You asked OP a question and I asked you one. Are you okay? You're a very odd person. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I asked Op if her dd asked for chess, she explained grandpa taught her and for some reason you have taken exception to our conversation. [ Reply | More ]

I took exception to your question, not your conversation. You are pretending your question wasn't judgemental. You know quite well her 4 yr old didn't ask for chess. Stop pretending. You must feel silly about your question now, because unlike OP who answered your question, you never answered mine and instead chose to get defensive. [ Reply | More ]

I'm responding to your statements. That's what is done here. Like I said previously, you are a very odd person. I guess you realize how idiotic your question was. [ Reply | More ]

np: I just logged on and started reading this conversation. Sorry, but you seem a little wacky in this conversation. Chess for a child that young struck me as odd initially too, but if OP's child is interested in because of learning through a family member, then that makes sense. [ Reply | More ]

The strategic thinking in chess is unlike any other activity. It is amazing for brain deelopment, social awareness and it's a lot of fun. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Chess has a certain ettiquete (how do I spell that?) that you learn along with the game itself. Like in Golf or Fencing. It's a lesson in social rules...consideration, ceremony and also social strategy as you are constantly trying to predict what the other person will do next without revealign your own plans....somethign we do subtly and subconsciously in every relationship wether we mean to or not. It is my experience that Chess is pretty solitary. Yes, you play with another person, but there is very little conversation. [ Reply | More ]

exactly - I didn't want to join in this train wreck - but I'm a player and you don't sit around convesing - you are actually silent the entire game. [ Reply | More ]

An hour with a private chess teacher is about $100 FWIW. If you organize a group of 4 or so kids you can split the cost 4 ways. [ Reply | More ]
