Would you approach family members that smoke often around your own children? How do you do that? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

They are outside, but it is a small area and the smoke just stays there. I HATE it. DH is too scared to say anything, and I know that I am going to say something real soon. WHy can't he just fucking say something? [ Reply | More ]

I'd stop coming w/ dcs, honestly and if I was asked why, I'd say I am concerned about the health hazards of the atmosphere [ Reply | More ]

If someone smokes at a family gathering, I just walk ds away and play with him in another area. Is that what you meant? [ Reply | More ]

But you don't say anything to the person that is smoking? You just move the child away? [ Reply | More ]

To say something would be condescending, no one smokes right in his face, and it's always outside [ Reply | More ]

shouldn't we be condescending when it comes to our children's health? [ Reply | More ]

If it's really health of your kids you're concerned about, you can protect them by walking them away. Being condescending will not teach ppl anything, it will just make you feel angry and controlling, and you'll look like an ahole to others. You can't change everyone, just your own situation. If it's just once in a while and you moderate the time you spend there, I am sure it's not too harmful. A campfire, smog from the bus, etc. are as harmful, but you are not trying to get rid of those, I assume. Just don't go if you're so concerned. [ Reply | More ]

people walk thru big cities with their children. there's all sorts of smoke, exhaust and all other kinds of things in the air. the smoke from one relative's cigarette isn't that much of an issue to me. not if it means starting a drama with that family member, anyway. [ Reply | More ]

I grew up with a mother who smoked constantly, as did her friends around me. I hated it. I will not allow anyone to smoke near my kids in a social situation -- family member or not. Not only does the smell make me sick, but I don't want them having that kind of role model. [ Reply | More ]
