my g/f cracked her newborn's skull when she fell on her while walking in a carrier. now i'm nervous about carrying db in my wrap. does anyone use a bicycle helmut? i think that would be wise esp if taking db around town via subway (stairs), etc. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

the fact that you are nervous probably means you will be more careful - it is only 2 months that they are "newborn" and you will probably not be doing that much traveling.... besides I don't think they have bike helmuts that small. [ Reply | More ]

what???? that is so freakish. i thought newborns' skulls were still soft -- how did it "crack"? and are you suggesting putting a bicycle helmet on your baby? if I saw you I would laugh and point. [ Reply | More ]

newborns skulls are not "soft" and can easily fracture. The "softness" you are referring to is that the bones are not fully fused and so there are "soft spots" over which the brain is not fully protected by bone. [ Reply | More ]

agree people are being mean. However seriously have you ever seen a newborn? they are really really small you will not be able to find a helmut that fits. [ Reply | More ]

because it is overprotective. I'm sure it did happen, but really, what are the chances? [ Reply | More ]

so true = good luck finding a helmet that small. You may want to just make one out of bubble wrap. [ Reply | More ]

Do you seriously think anyone makes bicycle helmets in size newborn? The weight of it would probably do more harm to the baby's undeveloped neck muscles than any good it could possibly do. [ Reply | More ]

well, come on. we're supposed to run out and buy bike helmets for dbs because your uncoordinated friend couldn't manage to walk down the street without falling spread-eagle on the pavement? [ Reply | More ]

i understand your concern but it's a freak thing that happened. you can't protect your kid from everything. the chances of this happening are miniscule. just be careful. [ Reply | More ]

They say wearing a bicycle helmet outside of cycling is a bad idea. One of the unintended consequences of our hyper active, "you must wear a helmet" mentality is kids are strangling at a much higher rate. They leave their helmet on at the playground, the helmet gets caught on something and they hang from the straps. Sorry, I recognize you are anxious and this is not a baby issue. I'm just jumping off from your post 'cause you made me think of it. (Plus I have to imagine with their weak neck muscles this would be an all around bad idea for baby.) [ Reply | More ]

I fell once while I had db in the ergo and caught myself but if I hadn't would have landed on db. [ Reply | More ]

^^oops, meant to add, I think those carriers are a bit dangerous too and especially worry going up and down stairs, crossing the street...before I hear about women in the rice patty fields carrying their dcs around...none of them are in a cement jungle like manhattan with icy streets, steps etc. Our preschool sends a letter every year warning parents of the danger of carrying children on their shoulders should the parent trip and fall and I think the baby carriers pose the same danger [ Reply | More ]

I remember when I was was walking in the park with my db in a bjorn (facing in) and a man stopped me to tell me that he worked in a hospital emergency room and took care of a lot babies whose parents had fallen while walking with the db in a carrier. he said it was much safer to have the kids facing in...never out... for what it's worth. a lot of these responses prove that this forum has gone downhill. calling someone whose child has a cracked skull uncoordinated or a spaz? karma is going to shove its foot so far up some of your a$$es that's for sure. [ Reply | More ]
