ds erbs: 99 v, 38 p, 86 overall. Is it totally hopeless? We can explain some contributing factors, and he'll get a great school report, but it's not like he was sick when he took the test or something. Anyone able to offer any experiences that might give me hope? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Does he have learning disability? I am afraid any private school will consider him. But Dwight has QUEST program for kids with LD, I think. [ Reply | More ]

my dc had v 99 and p 76, with overall 95. got in to a few schools, but none tt, even though w/l'd (high w/l in some cases). He was just not developmentally at the same level with visuospatial vs verbal stuff. We later had him tested to follow up and make sure it was purely a developmental issue, and he scored 99x3. could kick myself for testing him as a young 4, but he was so verbal and bright, I did not think it would be an issue. verbal scores all at the top of what was possible so it brought up the score. luckily, most of these splits are just developmental. guess I should have prepped him a bit (he can be reluctant to try new things) and think I scheduled it wrong, maybe should have waited until he was older [ Reply | More ]

my dc just tested as a young 4 in late spring- the school agreed he was ready- and also had high verbal and low visuospatial score. is this in and of itself an indication a child should wait another year to apply? [ Reply | More ]

OP: related Q, would you bother trying to apply to privates, or skip process and put ds in K now? He is fall b-day, so if we apply and get shut-out he'll have to go straight into 1st grade. Zoned school is PS6, which seems very good, but am worried that he won't get the support there that he could use, and I wanted to at least take a shot at privates. [ Reply | More ]

this is totally 3d hand or owrse, but 6 has i think a good reputation for helping LD or similar kids. he'd probably get good support. ( [ Reply | More ]

np Is it a given that this type of score, on a test taken only once, warrants "support"? [ Reply | More ]

of course not. but OP is concerned that it might. [ Reply | More ]

why not do both? put him in ps6 and appy to privates. [ Reply | More ]

definitely. ps6 is the one public school that is very good about participating in the private school application process. [ Reply | More ]

poster above with split: Depends on whether you really want private. Given that he is a fall birthday dc, I would put him in public for a year, re-test and try when he is 5. I think all these people want you to believe he has an LD, but it is much more likely to be developmental. I think public k is very academic, and will be better prep, plus you will not have the record of these not so great scores clouding the picture down the road. [ Reply | More ]

np: She can't have him retested for K entry, they need to apply this fall and since ds just took the ERBs he can't take them again. [ Reply | More ]

DF with very verbal, poised DD has very similar split (>50 pt gap between verbal and performance) and they were SO even though they applied very broadly from TT to 3rd tier, etc. (scores came in late). Overall score was well within acceptable levels for many of her schools but schools were likely concerned with huge gap. [ Reply | More ]

This could well happen, which is why OP should seriously consider sending ds to PS6 and apply to privates from there. [ Reply | More ]

NNP: DC had a very similar split a few years back. Accepted at one school, WL at 4, dinged at 4. Flourishing in local public, not 6, but D2 gen'l ed. I would definitely send DC to public K, especially if it's a good one like 6. [ Reply | More ]

this shows how insane it is to test such a small child. ps6 is supposed to be so great, so you have a great fallback. i can't tell if you think he knows all of those performance things or not. what are the contributing factors? [ Reply | More ]
