My ds will be 15mo this week-he says mama, dada all the time. He also says buh bye (at times), elmo and hooray. He points to things and says "DIS" meaning THIS. Should I be worried there is a speech delay or is it too early to be concerned? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

speech is really one of the less significant aspects re concerns about autism. the social reciprocity/relatedness aspects are much more critical - and he sounds like he has those in spades. so relax. there is a huge range of norm for speech development and he's in it. [ Reply | More ]

no prob. i feel like this kind of a qualifying statement should just be a permanent post on UB somewhere. it is so sad that part of motherhood now is scanning for autism signs - and so many mothers confuse this with speech development (which, as i mentioned, has a huge range of normal).
