The article is specifically about Dalton having no kids going to Harvard this year. Did you miss this part of the article? "This year wasn’t a wash for everyone. The Trinity School on the Upper West Side, with a graduating class of 107 students, is sending six students to Harvard, seven to Yale and two to Princeton. The Horace Mann School, with a graduating class of 173, is sending nine students to Yale, nine to Princeton and eight to Harvard . . ." [ Reply | More ]

While the article focused on Dalton, it said the other schools, Trinity, Horace Mann, didn't do as well, either. 25 in total to HPY out of a class of 173 is not that many, given the number of legacies at Horace Mann as well. I was surprised the stats weren't better at Trinity and Horace Mann given the snobbery of parents with kids there! [ Reply | More ]

what? That is totally in line with the application to acceptance ratio at those schools. Why is it supposed to be much better? [ Reply | More ]

No it's not. The same article quotes Marymount having sent 4 to Harvard the previous year out of a class of forty something. That's a much better stat than the one Horace Mann can brag about. [ Reply | More ]

it is a total misconception to think that going to a TT school will "get you" into a certain college-there are so many other factors: legacy status, diversity, if you play a sport, class standing, etc. [ Reply | More ]

^^^not to mention that getting accepted at a school and going there are not the same thing-there are definitely those who get into HYP or could get in but choose to go to smaller, more arty schools. [ Reply | More ]

Absolutely true. I get sick of this attitude that HYP is the end-all-be-all. I choose dc's school because of the education, not so that I could one day say my dc goes to HYP. I would be thrilled is dc went to any of the school some of those parents & kids seem to be poo-pooing [ Reply | More ]

There may be a handful who get into HYP but choose not to go, but let's be realistic. At most, they are only a handful. [ Reply | More ]

Still, statistically it may make a difference. There are also people who just don't apply to those schools. Maybe dc had no interest despite what Mom & Dad wanted and used school restrictions as an excuse [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, but these kids are being prepped from the 7th grade apparently, taking practice tests, drilling vocab works and math skills, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Lots of kids do that, not necessarily to go to HYP [ Reply | More ]

Of course it is to go to HYP or the like Stanford, MIT, etc. Or to get full scholarships. Of course it's about having the best college options. Get real. [ Reply | More ]

You just agreed - not necessarily HYP, but to have the best college option for that student. [ Reply | More ]

I never said HYP in my post -- look closesly. My point was about the lengths to which competitive parents will go to in order to maximize their kid's college options. I never said it was ONLY HYP, but obviously if you're so competitive and tunnel-visioned about placement, those school will be on top of the list, as well as the options I mentioned above. Only TT that published 2008 results specifically is Collegiate. Others haven't updated their results but most give 4 or 5 year results together. I would assume no Harvard accepts for 2008 but Yale and Princeton and other ivies accepts since NY Post would not have left it out if they were shut out of the other YP as well. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know how this is humbling to be honest. New Yorkers are jaded to think it is. A tremendous % of these kids go to strong schools, this Harvard thing is just a fun headline. Whether its the strength of the education you get there vs. growing up with parents who are more likely than the average American parent to have resources, be alumni of top colleges, or guide their children to reach for the top colleges is another question! Harvard isn't just some silly pipe dream. If you were fortunate enough to attend, you'd know the richness of the undergraduate experience it provides, let alone the lifelong validation. [ Reply | More ]

It has the largest endowment, that does not mean that other schools don't have equal resources & in some areas better. [ Reply | More ]

The large endowment allows Harvard to do a lot of things other institutions cannot. But Harvard's greatness doesn't just rest with its endowment. It has been a pioneer in higher education. It has nurtured all different types of talent -- from acting to medicine. Overall, it is a spectacular record and an outstanding educational institution. Let's call a spade a spade. [ Reply | More ]

No one is disputing that the kids mainly go on to great schools. But if you've ever hung out with their parents, the sense of arrogance and entitlement many exude is suffocating, and it serves the parents right for thinking somehow their kids deserved Harvard more than the kid at the public school in Brooklyn just because their kid went to Horace Mann, Trinity, or Dalton.
