What is the norm cut off date for public K across the country? Is NYC unusual with Jan. 1? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

43 states have a cut off of 10/15 or earlier (the earliest being 6/1), so yes, NY is unusual. [ Reply | More ]

but NY and CA are the most populous states and have very late cut-offs, so lots more kids are subjected to the late cut-off than it would seen from number of states [ Reply | More ]

keep in mind that cutoffs vary within the state. Even different towns on LI have different dates. [ Reply | More ]

But all the dates are in December, in general any state with variation has only variation within a month. [ Reply | More ]

Here in CA it's Dec 1st. But it's not strictly enforced. I wish it were earlier. [ Reply | More ]

We're pretty populous in Texas, as well. Our cut-off is 9/1. [ Reply | More ]

education is a state issue really, and should remain so. Any time fed gov't intervenes, it is a disaster. Think NCLB. [ Reply | More ]

Also, national norm won't help because plenty of people ignore the cut off anyway. Even in places with Sept 1 cut off, summer kids are routinely redshirted. [ Reply | More ]

And sometimes younger kids are "tested" to see if they are ready. My SIL lives outside of Chicago & her neighbors thought she was absurd not to test her early Oct. dc for early admission to K. [ Reply | More ]

It's far far more common to hold kids back then try to push them in early. Very few people consider that these days, and pretty much exclusively with girls only. [ Reply | More ]
