why do you think that school admissions inpires more jealousy than other things (money, looks, real estate)? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

because looks, $$ and real estate has to do with us. School admissions has to do with our kids and they are a reflection of us that in some ways we can't control- and that makes it much more personal. [ Reply | More ]

I actually think it's because people really want what's best for their kids and they see placement at a top school and a great education as something that their kids won't have while other kids do. It seems to bring out the worst in people because it hits upon an almost primal urge to take care of their young. I suspect that when the kids are older and are more responsible for their own fate, it might not bring about such deep feelings because it isn't so much a reflection upon the parents. BTW, i don't think that a top school is the only way to get a great education. People thrive in many different schools. I'm just saying that that is the perception or fear I think many people here have. [ Reply | More ]

I agreed with you until you said it changes when they are older. I kind of doubt that it will. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is the sense of failure for not being able to provide your dc with something that other kids have. It is also related to anxiety that if you don't give it to them, they will fail in life. so you imagine that all these other kids will do well, and yours won't. it isn't true, of course, but the anxiety about the future and failing your kids is unbearable. For less healthy people, it is about them, their egos and maintaining a false sense of superiority. [ Reply | More ]
