i am trying to determine if I should have my late Dec boy repeat K? is there a good test ie ERB or stanford binet, which would give me a good indication if he's ready for first grade. he's average intelligence and on the immature side of kids in his class. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If you research kindergarten retention, you'll see it's not recommended. [ Reply | More ]

np: This is not true. If child has issues in K, it's much better to repeat then that later. [ Reply | More ]

also, we would transfer him to a new school if we decided to leave him back. i guess it would be a terrible strain in his confidence to give him behind in the same school. [ Reply | More ]

If he is in NYC, it may be hard as many schools don't allow this, it may be easier to repeat at same school. Was it recommended by his teacher? [ Reply | More ]

he had 2 teachers. one thought he needs an extra yr, but would "do fine" in 1st grade, the other didn't really have anything to say except "don't worry" because "he will turn out the way he was meant to be." [ Reply | More ]

My son just finished K. If you can swing it I would switch schools and repeat. i think its very important for kids to feel confident about their performance measured against their peers. Ny son turned 6 in Nov. and was one of the oldest kids in his class but I still would have eld him back if there was any way I could. [ Reply | More ]

thank you for responding. am wondering, if there's no way to transfer him this yr (we may be moving next yr and don't want too much adjustment issues), is it unreasonable to have him repeat 1st grade? [ Reply | More ]

Needs an extra year but will do fine is contradictory. If the feeling is he'll do fine in 1st grade, send him [ Reply | More ]

Google "first grade readiness" and read the check lists. You might be surprised what is expected, which is not much. [ Reply | More ]

is that apply nationwide? b/c this is the metro ny area which really has little connection, IMO, to the rest of the country. [ Reply | More ]

Being average and immature aren't reasons to repeat. Was he unable to follow directions in K? Did he not meet expectations? How was he socially? [ Reply | More ]

social skills are his weakness. he's immature. but is able to follow directions, has an attention span, and can write his letters and draw. [ Reply | More ]

my son (who was sept. baby) had poor social skills (not aggressive or rude, just v. shy and withdrawn) and i sent him ahead to first even though i was debating holding him back. he continues to have trouble making friends and remains shy, and i still wonder if i should have held him back. in retrospect, i think it would have been better because you can't lose with a little extra maturity. it is not just about first grade, but about the next 12 years. it can't hurt to have the edge of maturity (instead of being the youngest) when he gets into high school, college, etc. i have even considered switching my son to private school just to buy him another year before middle school. In real life, I have never met a parent who regretted holding a child back before or for K - I have met several who regretted NOT holding back - especially in NY with that whacked Dec 31 cutoff. [ Reply | More ]
